Sensoria is the UK's festival of film and music. We offer a unique, eclectic mix of screenings, outdoor cinema, live music, exhibitions and installations across Sheffield. 2017 sees our 10th edition Sensoria X.
For our 10th festival we would like to celebrate Sheffield music and encourage new talent. Our award will give a 'leg up' to a talented artist or band through an open call for submissions (any and all music styles welcome). The chosen proposal will be offered a £2,000 fee to write new music and perform at Sensoria festival. They will also win a day to record their work in a Sheffield studio.
We really hope that everyone will get behind our bid to help a young artist/band - there are many challenges to pursuing a career in this sector and we want to give new talent a decent chance.
Additionally we will commission a metal designer in the city to create a physical award that will be passed on each year.
The project has been backed by an array of Sheffield musicians who agree that it’s time to help out the next generation of musical talent. Martyn Ware, Stephen Mallinder, Nat Johnson and Richard Hawley have all given the award the ‘thumbs up’.
"What a great idea from a great festival! This will be such an amazing win for someone. It's so rare to find such an open and welcoming opportunity, especially if you're just starting out. I hope some dazzling ideas are born from this, Sheffield."
"When we first started making sounds there were no bands, artists, or even acknowledgement of Sheffield having its own scene. Music was something other people did; it came to town from 'another place' on its way to somewhere else. But we egged each other on, the floodgates opened and now the city's identity and spirit is built on its music and culture. I think it’s important we recognise that and a music award seems a fitting way to keep that legacy going."
Stephen Mallinder (Wrangler, formerly Cabaret Voltaire)
No proceeds from this campaign will go to Sensoria usual running or staffing costs, the income will be spent on the project.
Costs of the project:
£2,500 metal award - design and creation (including materials)
£2,000 commission fee for band/musician
£1,000 venue hire, security, AV hire for the performance
£250 recording studio hire
£300 film company - video
£125 independent judging panel - travel costs/expenses
£325 crowdfunder fees (5% commission charged)
Sensoria will absorb the marketing costs for the project and costs of staff time.
We would like the Bouquet of Steel to become an annual award, so if we're lucky enough to go over target the proceeds will be carried over as the fee for a musician in 2018.
* This project is presented by Sensoria Festival and separate to the Bouquet of Steel music shop (and promoter) - we just happen to share the same passion for Sheffield music and will work on complementary projects to help spread the word. Find out more about them here http://bouquet-of-steel-the-national-centre-for-sheffield-music.sqwiz.co.uk and on Facebook.
