Help us keep making the Birmingham Art Map! £6000 will keep the map going for a year. The more we raise, the longer we can keep mapping!
What is the Birmingham Art Map?
The Birmingham Art Map makes it easy to discover, explore and enjoy the great art, ideas, culture and creativity made by Birmingham for Birmingham, most of which is free to experience. The city is now home to a fantastic range of art galleries, artist-led projects, studio groups and individuals who programme public exhibitions and events throughout the year. The printed Art Map lists key exhibitions and events on offer. We have also created a website as a simple, central digital information point with links to all the listed organisations, to make it easy for visitors to find up to date information and plan their cultural journey. The Birmingham Art Map is designed and printed in Digbeth.
The story so far...
We launched the map in 2013 because we were frustrated that there was no simple way to navigate the art scene in Birmingham. We wanted more people to know just how good it is, and how much excellent art and culture is on offer in our city, from tiny artist led projects to exhibitions at the biggest galleries.
Since then we have listed over 750 shows and events by a whole host of individuals, groups and organisations which feature the work of 100's of artists, many of whom are at the start of their careers. The map comes out quarterly and each year we print and distribute 44,000 printed maps, have over 13,000 visitors to our website and help 3000 followers keep up to date on twitter.
You can pick up an Art Map for free in arts venues, shops, cafes and public spaces across the city.
What do we need money for?
It costs just under £12,000 a year to collect listings information, design, print and distribute 11,000 copies each season and make the information available online. Half of this is covered by listings fees - which cost £40–£100 depending on the size of the project or organisation - we keep the listings at an affordable level, because we want to list small scale, emerging projects as well as larger established spaces, but this means we have raise £6,000 a year from elsewhere.
The Art Map is free for anyone to pick up and use. If everyone who's ever taken an Art Map, or used the website just put a pound in the pot we'd easily hit our target. Please support us so we can continue to tell the city and the world how brilliant Birmingham's art and culture is.
This project has been approved for funding through the Artists + The Crowd match funding. It has received a bridge of 50% towards its fundraising target from Arts Council England.
