Fight against human trafficking through mobile gaming.
Sonas World and LearningSigns, in co-creation develop a mobile gaming programme called ‘Human not for sale’ for the fight against human trafficking.
We believe that awareness in combination with tangible outcomes is the greatest agent for change. We are confident that we can achieve this through the ‘Human not for sale’ mobile learning game. For that purpose, we intend to design a gamified Android learning app, aiming to educate parents & communities in Cambodia about the risks of human trafficking. In collaboration with the Cambodian end-users we develop the app, equip the parents & community reps with smart-phones & monitor the learning progress. We start small in one specific community in Prey Veng, and create a positive ripple effect in Cambodia and around the world.

Who we are
LearningSigns are an expert consultancy in mobility, learning, and gamification. We develop, design, and implement gamified mobile learning programmes, helping people adopt positive behaviour change. Our gamified, image-based literacy apps “Learn the alphabet before the language” improved personal life circumstances to countless people worldwide.
We are a team of anthropologists, techies, and education experts. We have tech and behaviour change expertise: will develop and deploy the Android smart-phone app. We have a proven track record for localising products. Our literacy apps are available in 13 languages.

Our partner is Sonas World, a UK social business operating in Cambodia to empower individuals living in poverty, by combining resources from all levels of the value chain.
The key motivation to participate in the co-creation project is to bring additional resources to the communities they work with in Cambodia to reduce the risks of social issues that poverty brings and to encourage entrepreneurship and leadership. Sonas implement social projects on the ground & have already completed projects with 2 UK universities including University of Oxford. Bring the market reach and grassroot approach with rural communities where most trafficking cases exist.

Priya from LearningSigns had known Paul from Sonas through Ashridge Business School in London where he studied his MBA and Priya lectured. When she saw that Paul has left his cosy corporate job to start up a social business, she contacted him to see how they could collaborate. Paul and Keeva witnessed how human trafficking was a big problem in Cambodia. Both Sonas and LearningSigns decided to collaborate to try and save people from the risks of human trafficking. Education and training were integral to both organisations and therefore co-creating an educational tool to reduce the risk of slavery made sense.
LearningSigns developed gamified literacy apps for the Latin, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew, and Greek alphabet, featuring a unique learning concept. The idea was to bring the learning apps to places where they are most needed. A logical consequence was to cooperate with Sonas as they operate in Cambodia and immerse themselves in the environment, and know the local problems inside out. Together, we identified the human trafficking problem as the most pressing issue. We are like-minded individuals who mean to create impact, we promote change at grassroot level, we achieve scalability through technology and gaming, a proven concept to implement sustainable behaviour change.
The issue
Today, the social issue of human trafficking & modern slavery impacts everyone especially as our world continues to become more interconnected. In Cambodia, an estimated 2.8 million people are working in forced labour, which is 10% of the world’s 27 million people working in modern slavery. The problems continues to grow because:
The solution
We can change behaviour by equipping social changemakers with smartphones with the image-based gamified safety app to educate families in an interactive and engaging way on the risks of human trafficking and ways out, e. g. the inclusion into the micro-financing programme. The learning tool is based on real life scenarios relevant to local culture and experiences.

Why we crowdfund
We have been working hard in Europe and in Cambodia to gain deep understanding of the root causes of the problem and to build the reach for the ‘Human not for sale’ programme. We have developed successful partnerships in Europe and Cambodia, including local CSOs and community leaders to connect with families affected by trafficking. Sonas along with CLA (Child and Life Association), have the reach to 130 villages and 1400 families in 3 districts of Prey Veng province where the majority of human trafficking cases occur. We have held 5 focus groups to identify the key challenges and learning behaviours of the communities affected. We are now in the position to work with survivors to identify the specific content for the safety app, turning future users into co-creators. We crowdfund because:

FAQs
How do you ensure that the smartphones do not “disappear”?Specifically, we will work with 30 local changemakers, whom we hand the smartphones and who will facilitate the learning process. This way we can ensure that the smartphones will not disappear over time.
How will mostly illiterate end-users work with a smartphone?
The app will be image-based. Also, the facilitation by the local changemakers will provide the personal contact necessary fort he initial learning process. The combination of face-to-face and mobile learning will eventually yield to the digital literacy, much needed for today's economic wellbeing.
How will families make up the financial loss from not selling their children or other family members?
The image-based safety app educates families in an interactive and engaging way on the risks of human trafficking. In addition, it shows the options available out of the existence-threatening situation, that is, entering a micro-finance programme available through Sonas World.
