100 Friends for Lamin and Bakary

Aim
To support two Gambian sign language interpreters to gain vital skills and experience in the UK to take back to their community.
We'd like to bring two interpreters, Lamin and Bakary, from the Gambia over to the UK in September 2014 to attend the UK Association of Sign Language Interpreters (ASLI) Conference. With your help, we can make this happen and offer them the chance to gain vital skills in interpreting that they will then be able to take back to their native Deaf community.
About us
Our project is simple, a charity in the Gambia - Gambian Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing - and a group of sign language interpreters in the UK have set up a project entitled GADHOH Interpreter Project where a group of 18 interpreters and one interpreting agency donate money each month to fund interpreters in the Gambia to continue their work in the Deaf community. The aims of this organisation are:
To support the provision, development and sustainability of GADHOH’s interpreting services for Deaf people in Gambia, in order to increase Deaf people’s ability to access education, training, work, health and legal domains.

Lamin and Bakary
We'd like to bring two interpreters, Lamin and Bakary, from the Gambia over to the UK in September 2014 to attend the Association of Sign Language Interpreters for the UK (ASLI) Conference, shadow a variety of interpreters, and receive interpreter and legal interpreter training (being delivered by the trainers on a voluntary basis). We have been awarded £600 from the ASLI Giving Up A Day's Pay fund, as a start, but we'll need quite a bit more to cover the cost of bringing them over to the UK.
The money that is raised here will be spent on their air fares, visas and travel around the UK (accommodation will be free as they'll be hosted by interpreters in the UK). We have developed an itinerary for them to visit interpreters in London, Stockport, Leeds and Kent and also attend the ASLI conference which will be held in Manchester on the 27th and 28th of September 2014.
Their experiences in the UK will enable them to gain vital knowledge and skills in interpreting that will be beneficial when they return to their colleagues and native Deaf community. The life experiences and levels of access and provision for Deaf people varies across the world; in the UK we still have a long way to go due to the current economic climate, in the Gambia they have much further to go.
