To establish a top quality sailing school in Borth, Wales

by Emma Heathcote in Bow Street, Dyfed, Wales

This is an excellent opportunity to attract significant development funding to Borth, to boost economic prosperity, provide new jobs, and offer year-round trade for local businesses in Borth.

The aim is to establish a top-quality sailing school in Borth, offering professional and leisure sailing courses, and targeted sailing events such as special-interest seminars and sailing regattas. The Ysgol Hwylio Borth Sailing School will offer all-year-round quality sailing courses, accredited by the RYA and MCA, with opportunities for both ‘at sea’ and shore-based learning, depending on weather and sea conditions.

There will also be opportunities to collaborate with smaller local businesses currently offering surfing, kite-surfing and stand-up paddle-boarding courses, and opportunities to extend the delivery of sailing programmes to other local sites, such as Aberyswyth Marina. It is anticipated that the professional 'at sea' yacht sailing courses will operate from Aberystwyth marina, whilst the professional 'on-shore' courses and the leisure dinghy sailing courses will operate from Borth.

Ysgol Hwylio Borth Sailing School is expected to attract all-year-round visitors from across the UK and hopes develop Borth as a major sailing centre in mid-Wales. The sailing school will provide new jobs in the village and will have a major impact on the prosperity of other local services - shops, pubs, B&Bs, camp-sites and transport providers will all benefit from an increased number of visitors to Borth each year.  The sailing school will bring exceptional prosperity and added value to the Borth and Aberystwyth economies, by increasing the demand for accommodation, catering and transport services throughout area.

The Ysgol Hwylio Borth Sailing School will offer sustainable business activity throughout the year, creating at 5 new full-time jobs and 12 new part-time jobs, across 10 different business functions. All staff at Ysgol Hwylio Borth Sailing School will benefit from continued professional development to deliver a top-quality customer experience.

Ysgol Hwylio Borth Sailing School will be very well positioned to offer a profitable, all-year-round business, offering practical sailing courses for both yacht and dinghy sailing from April to October; high-profile regattas and competitive sail racing in the height of summer; shore based courses (such as navigation, first aid, radar, VHS radio comms, boat and engine maintenance ….) from November to March; and high-profile conferences and seminars throughout the winter months.

Ysgol Hwylio Borth Sailing School will use extensive marketing activities to attract participants onto both recreational and professional sailing courses. These marketing and recruitment activities will help position Borth, and Wales, as a sailing destination, offering exceptional quality experiences and value-for-money. The Ysgol Hwylio Borth Sailing School will create an active and vibrant focal point for local residents and visitors to Borth, and will capitalise on Borth’s coastal location and exceptional maritime heritage.

Attracting full capacity on all the training courses offered, and throughout the year, is fundamental to the success of the sailing school. Emma Heathcote (leading this initiative) has 25 years professional experience in attracting international and UK students onto academic and skills training programmes in the UK, in both the further education and higher education sector. Emma is a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and holds a CIM Professional Diploma in Marketing.

The challenge of attracting full capacity on the different courses offered at Ysgol Hwylio Borth Sailing School, is met by the superb coastal location of Borth, featuring predominantly on-shore westerly winds and protected bay with relatively few rip-currents; the proximity of the RNLI lifeboat station, and in summer, RNLI lifeguards on the beach; and Borth’s impressive maritime history and a long-standing reputation as being a ‘friendly village’ welcoming visitors to Borth.
