I would like to set up a not-for-profit community based centre to help young people while they wait for assessment and support from official mental health services.
From personal experience I have realised there is a real gap in mental health support for people who are not classed as having 'severe' mental health issues. My concern is that while young people wait on long waiting lists for help that their mental health might deteriorate when early intervention could prevent this.
We would like to offer drop in sessions, affordable counselling and courses that combine mindfulness, emotional resiliency and CBT techniques to help young people cope better and to give them a toolkit of strategies should they experience further difficulties. We would also signpost young people and their families to further support services and we would offer support groups for parents and carers.
The money raised would initially go towards funding a venue for the centre for its first year of operation.
We would like this to be a co-ordinated approach, staffed by experienced and qualified mentors and counsellors as part of an area-wide focus on children's mental health and wellbeing in Rutland.
