I was 8 when my dad had to take medical retirement from work - he was 54. It was a slow deterioration at first, by the time I was 16 he couldn't drive anymore but could shuffle short distances. By 18, when he was 64 he was almost completely confined to a wheelchair and with the help of district nurses and carers we got by, however later that year his health took a bad turn and he had a lengthy stay in hospital due to COPD. He never came back home, he went from home to home before landing at Strode Park in Herne.
For Dad, the real struggle of Parkinson's was losing his music and his independence. He was angry at first when he couldn't play his euphonium anymore and in later years frustrated when the same problems meant his speech was indeterminable. Christmas 2014 he said all he wanted was to walk again- he never gave up. He was bed bound for the last 4 years of his life, but he was a constant source of humour to us all. He fought off pneumonia the year before it eventually caught him again and left him in hospital with sepsis.
My dad was a retired Fireman, he was in the army for 12 years from age 16, he was an ambulance driver, a lifeguard. My dad was and always will be my hero.
This year to raise money and honour his memory I have created (with help) You Will Be Found - A Musical Variety Show to be held on 22nd and 23rd November 2019 at The Centre in Birchington. Every penny raised once costs are paid will be divided between Parkinsons & Strode Park Foundation in Herne. The variety will feature some of my dad's favourite musicals and musical numbers as well as crowd favourites and some more modern musicals!
