Help support children's education in Yemen

by Care4Yemen in London

We did it
On 3rd March 2015 we successfully raised £1,230 with 11 supporters in 49 days

We're raising funds for YERO which takes some of the poorest children off the streets of Sana'a and helps them get the education they want.

 New stretch target

Every additional £240 raised will go towards the sponsorship of another child at YERO for one year.  This will pay for the extra-curricular sessions they attend at YERO, together with the tuition given to the mothers, the generous assistance they give to the children's families in Ramadhan, the presents at Eid, the school bags and uniform at the start of the school year, and so on.

Whatever you can afford to give will be gratefully accepted and wisely spent.

It costs an average of  £20 per month or £240 per annum for each child attending the centre.  We are seeking to sponsor 5 children in this campaign, and any money raised in addition to this will go towards sponsoring more children.

We're raising funds for YERO which has been working with some of the most deprived children in Yemen's capital city, Sana'a, for the past 10 years, turning around the lives of children from families too poor to send their children to school, often putting them out to work for a living on the streets, by begging or selling goods or services.  Yemen Education and Relief Organisation (YERO) helps these children build a better future for themselves by enrolling them onto school, and giving them homework classes and additional learning opportunities through extra-curricular activities.

Although state education is free in Yemen, uniform, stationery items, school shoes and bags are costly items and not having them can prevent some families from sending their children to school. YERO provides all these items free of charge to the children enrolled with them.

YERO's only stipulation is commitment: attending YERO 3 times a week enables the children to complete their homework and learn additional skills which would likely otherwise be impossible.

YERO's children come from very poor families which need the income their child makes whilst working on the streets.  For this reason, YERO teaches the parents (mostly mothers) how to make a living by developing their skills in areas such as sewing, cooking, baking and even art!  With these skills, they make beautiful handicrafts which YERO sells on their behalf and the profits go directly to the mothers.  YERO even offers microloans to those who are more confident and enterprising and want to start their own business.

YERO currently has over 500 children enrolled in its program and hundreds on the waiting list and in the 10 years since it was founded by Mrs Nouria Nagi OBE, it has gained an enviable reputation and position of respect.  However, YERO is a charity which relies on the goodwill and generosity of the general public.

It costs an average of  £20 per month or £240 per annum for each child attending the centre.  We are seeking to sponsor 5 children in this campaign, and any money raised in addition to this will go towards sponsoring more children.
