Coronavirus has had a huge impact on us all. The Youth Basketball League (ybl.org.uk) have had to cancel all leagues and postpone our planned new projects.
This has come at the climax of the season when our clubs would receive the most financial support as we build toward the Playoffs in April and the Season Finals Event in May.
As many clubs use schools and leisure facilities as their home court, we will not be able to resume any activity until schools are open and social distancing is relaxed.
Our project focus remains valid and highly important for the community, but we will have to move the event to the start of the new season and seek to fully fund a few events while the clubs get back to a normal.
Thank you to everyone who has support us so far.
Please share and please help us to get our young people back in to sport.
Our Story and Projects
In 2014, meetings between local basketball clubs and parents within the West Midlands region decided there was a critical need for young people to have organised events at the entry level of the game. From this group of volunteers was formed the Youth Basketball League (YBL). Our main purpose being the offering of competitive games within newly formed leagues for children from 12 to 19.
Our core values are:
- fair play,
What we have created through passion and hard work is the only Youth Basketball League in the country, that is run by a dedicated team of volunteers for an ever increasing community of clubs and families. We now have over 100 teams and 1000 players participating in regulated weekly leagues.
A positive by product of our professional attitude is that we can boast many players who started their playing career in our league who have then gone on to represent regional or national teams. A real positive for us is the role models that these young people become after finding direction and becoming role models for junior players. The quality of what we have created is continuing to increase and we are forming a natural stepping stone from grass root to the regional programmes.
Our project - the next step in our community plan is to develop events for under 9 and under 11 year olds to play basketball. For this we will need to fund venues, additional equipment and balls for these younger children as not many venue are equipped for younger players to join in
