THE CARAF CENTRE was established in 1980, as a charity in Camden dedicated to creating positive change for children and families through our educational and welfare services. Our services focus on raising achievement, confidence building and personal development in a welcoming and joyful setting that promotes inclusion and equality for all.
We provide affordable services to cater for a diverse range of users including those facing challenging life factors such as low educational attainment, social exclusion and low income/free school meals.
Our services include the Sunshine Day Nursery (6 months - 4 years); Mandela Supplementary School (5 -16 years) and the Education Advocacy Service, taking on casework for parents whose children face a variety of difficult situations in school. In the last year, we helped close to 100 children, young people and families with our services.
We have a committed team of staff who create a positive impact on the lives of children, young people and families by providing opportunities to enhance learning, development, social, behavioural and communication skills. We want to continue providing these essential services to groups from marginalised/disadvantaged backgrounds who may be at risk of school exclusions and falling into gang activity, gun/knife crime and drug related offending.
We have been impacted by falling revenues as well as a reduction in funding in recent years. We want our community building to be a bright, cheerful and welcoming place for all our families, so that children have a safe space to socialise and learn away from the streets. We are seeking to raise funds to refurbish our multipurpose rooms, improve the toilets and renovate the reception area to create a more user-friendly space.
Funding our campaign will help our users benefit from;
• Improved access and facilities
• Wider range/better services
• Wider social inclusion and community support
• Facilities at reasonable community rates
Testimonial from a parent
"The teachers and staff are always helpful and forthcoming and provide an excellent opportunity for us. We are truly grateful to be part of The Caraf Centre."
Proposed projects for this year include parent workshops, where parents from Camden can meet with educators and discuss support for their children's learning and celebrate their achievements; and a Youth Empowerment Conference. The Caraf Centre has always worked well with stakeholders and engaged them in our services and we can secure positive outcomes from these projects.
In 2020, The Caraf Centre will be celebrating its 40th anniversary. As a long-standing charity making a positive difference by successfully serving the needs of Black and marginalised/ethnic and disadvantaged groups in Camden, we are planning an event to mark this occasion. A modern, refurbished centre with creative use of space will help us to cater for more users, continue delivering existing services and add new projects which will strengthen our links with the people of Camden and raise the profile of The Caraf Centre as a centre for community cohesion.
Your support will help us provide great opportunities for children and families.
