We created a new community scheme, supporting residents across Worthing by providing free vegan food and hygiene products on a drop-in basis to vegans and non-vegans in need. The Worthing Vegan Food Bank Network was founded with the aim to find a new way to give back during these challenging times.
Seeing people struggle in supermarkets and reading many desperate stories on social media by fellow Worthing residents, we wanted to come up with a way to support our ever-growing vegan community. We feel there is a need for an all-vegan food bank in our town, so decided to build a network of vegan-friendly, independent businesses in the Worthing area. The scheme is completely volunteer-led and relies on donations from locals and businesses where residents can Drop-in, Donate, and Claim non-perishable, in-date food and hygiene products.
The Worthing Vegan Food Bank was initially established at Field Row Take-Away and swiftly joined by vegan eatery Cactus Kitchen Gals. Together, they made the start for a small but central network of support for people in vulnerable situations, without compromising their business ethics.
Once it's safe for us to do so, we will start working with further independent, local businesses on opening other donation and claim points throughout Worthing. In the meantime we have launched a donation based parcel-delivery service and bi-monthly 'Food on the Table' local food handout events, for locals to receive free and nutritious food.
Now is the time for us to take a further step and look for premises to move all food items out if residential storage and set up a main hub incl. a soup kitchen.
