WHAT DO WE DO?

Worshipful Spectacles is more than just an optical boutique. Family run and fiercely independent we take what you put on your face very seriously. So much so we decided to open a workshop in 2016 and have been designing and hand making bespoke spectacles ever since.

Built in 2014 and featured on George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces our little shop reflects founder Natalie’s artistic background. Avoiding the bright, clinical, fast turnaround optical experience was paramount. She created an eccentric and homely space, treated each customer as an individual and filled it with unworn vintage and high end ready to wear frames. Building an ongoing relationship with our customers is at the heart of everything we do.

BRINGING MANUFACTURE BACK TO THE UK

Most eyewear companies produce offshore, mass produced frames that can be sold cheaply and in high quantities. Consequently, they design frames to fit average face shapes and sizes leaving a large proportion of people without choice.

Our workshop is the result of understanding these people and their needs. Run by Natalie’s partner Matthew, it embodies our love of design, craft and rejuvenating a once vibrant UK industry. We are privileged to work with our customers to create beautiful, unique and perfectly fitting eyewear. Seeing them at the end of the process looking and feeling amazing is what makes our work so rewarding.

COVID 19

To say this last year has been strange would be an understatement.

Following seven years of building our small business we were so excited at the start of the year. We had plans to expand our workshop, take on apprentices and our Made to Measure range was in early development.

By mid March we did not know if we would be able to pay the rent. With a shop and workshop in East London it was going to get serious rather quickly. We both work for the company so our problems were doubled.

Due to company structure we were unable to access any personal financial assistance, no furlough or wage grants. The status of our property made accessing government grants impossible until pressure from traders like us made a small grant available in June.

However, after the initial panic we were determined to pull through. We used the time to take all the information we have gained though 15 years of bespoke designs and refine our Made to Measure service. A government Bounce Back loan was accessed to cover rent and improve our workshop. A hell of a lot of admin has been done!

We had an amazing response to reopening after the first lockdown. It was heartening to see so many familiar faces return and support us. We have been buoyed by their commitment to our little company and feel optimistic that with your support  we can make it through lockdown 2 and continue to grow. The next 6 months are crucial to our business and our ongoing project to return eyewear manufacture to London. That apprentice will be needed!

WHERE NEXT

Your direct support thorough Pay It Forward and the Mayor’s pledge to match funds raised will allow us to continue our work in a number of ways:

  • Being in direct contact with our customers is fundamental to what we do.

We do not sell frames online as it does not allow us to ensure that the fit is correct. It simply goes against our ethos. A proportion of money raised will allow us to fit out our shop to ensure we are 100% Covid safe.

  • The majority of our past customer’s found us organincally.

We relied heavily on the footfall of our shop to grow our customer base. We will invest in improving our digital footprint, marketing material and reach.

  • Roll out Made to Measure.

You could say that this product line has been in development for 15 years. However, the past 8 months has seen a massive amount of work put in to bring it to fruition. We’re really excited to give backers early access to this new process.

Bespoke customer testimonial:

"Natalie and Matt have completed changed how I wear glasses and I can’t be more thankful of it. They understand how difficult for me to get a pair of spectacles off the shelves in high street stores coz of my nose bridge and the width of my face. Therefore the glasses they had in hand wouldn’t fit me and so I went for the bespoke service.

Nat designed more than 15+ variations (all on wooden moulds) after our initiation covering what I liked and what occasions I would wear glasses for. I then selected the two or three that I liked and afterwards Nat put additional finesse and adjusted my nose bridge. Once I was happy with the mould, I then picked the frame colour. Three/four weeks after, Nat delivered two pairs of well-designed well-crafted glasses. They fit my wide face and Asian nose bridge perfectly. It is truly amazing what Nat and Matt have done to change how I wear glasses. If you struggle to find a pair of spectacles that suit you, Nat and Matt will help you! "
