Clubhouse and Changing Room Improvement Project

by Wombat CC as we continue to grow and develop our activities in Bishops Lydeard, England, United Kingdom

We did it
On 29th July 2021 we successfully raised £17,700 ( + est. £2748.75 Gift Aid ) with 139 supporters in 28 days

The aim of the project is quite simply to modernize and make our facilities fit for purpose for all our users of the ground.

New stretch target

We would refurbish the existing clubroom with a new lighting, new ceiling and redecoration throughout.

Our Organisation

The Club has come on a real exciting journey - now running its own ground and facilities after being a nomadic club for so long. Having now secured the long term future of the ground with a freehold purchase, we are moving steadily forward in improving many key areas of the club to ensure its a facility for the whole community to enjoy and utilise.

The club became a registered Charity in 2020, improving our overall governance. We've got a beautiful ground but the clubhouse is modest and needs improving to enable us to both operate safely post covid and allow us to provide a warm and welcoming environment for our user groups. We have previously raised funds and delivered many other small projects with great success, however the clubhouse & changing room project is now the main priority project.

The benefit of our club to the local community

We were traditionally an adult male only club, however since 2018 through a club development planning process we have extended our offer to a much wider audience, aimed at the wider community. Since 2018 we have hosted disability cricket, and we are now successfully an ECB Disability Champion Club in 2021.

We're proud to host visually impaired cricket, with all training and matches for the Somerset Visually Impaired Team being run from our facilities. We have integrated the SVI club into our club calendar, and we aim to develop this programme further. Disability cricket is a growth area, and our new facilities are designed and developed with these players in mind.

Through close collaboration with the local schools network, in 2019 before Covid-19 hit, we launched our first ever junior activity programme with 36 children from 5-8yrs old on the ECB National Programme of All Stars Cricket. In 2020 we adapted our programme to keep momentum, and now in 2021 the programme has doubled in size with over 80 children aged 5-11yrs on both All Stars Cricket & Dynamo's Cricket. The growth has been phenomenal, and we are thrilled with its success. This brings families and the wider community to our club each week and has brought a positive change to our club.

The club being a registered charity, we're keen to play host to as much community activity as possible. We have a wide range of other users of the ground including other recreational teams, Women's and Girls cricket, including Western Storm training and representative age group cricket for Somerset. The club is really becoming a true community sports club benefiting many people.

Our Project and why its needed.

The original clubhouse was designed and constructed in the mid 1980's and is now in need of significant improvements to allow us to provide clean and appropriate facilities. Covid-19 has emphasized the fact that the clubs only toilet area and changing rooms are both restrictive and not fit for purpose, not allowing us to operate safely. Within the whole facility we only have two WC's for both non-players and players. This has been a real challenge with social distancing and bubbling requirements for both players & spectators.

Within the changing rooms there are only two shared domestic showers, which are not fit for purpose. As we return to play, we need to ensure we can improve this provision, especially with a growth in female participation these are woefully inadequate.

With our continued community engagement and growth of family and junior activity we need to ensure our facility is both designed and modernised to accommodate disabled users and young people. The existing clubhouse has no facilities for disabled users or baby changing facilities in the toilet area.

Plans & Designs

Our vision is to have a clubhouse and changing rooms which are suitable and appropriate for all users, both players and non-players. We need facilities which enables us to engage with the community, and encourages people to want to be active, healthy and feel that the club is clean, modern and accommodating.

The project will deliver:

  • Enlarged toilet area with better circulation.
  • Appropriate New disabled toilet, wetroom & baby changing facilities
  • Four individual cubicle showers in a changing room extension
  • Installation of a WC facility in each changing room.
  • Essential DDA compliance throughout.

The effects of Covid-19 on our Club

Covid-19 meant the majority of the 2020 playing season was lost, reducing our playing & bar revenues to raise funds to support this project. We have also lost a number of key fundraising events due to national lockdown and local restrictions which would of been great opportunities to support this project.

Covid-19 has highlighted that the age and functionality of our clubhouse is poor, and we need to improve our provision to cope with future demand to operate safely and effectively

Community Partners

We have worked closely with our local Cricket Board, Somerset Cricket Foundation in developing our offer and continue to plan for the future. The local school network and other sports groups are opportunities for us. We recognise we can work closely with the local football club that have a thriving junior section, including a number of female teams.

We are a rural club which places great emphasis on working with and supporting local businesses from the local area. We have a cohort of local businesses which support and work with us to deliver cricket in the community. We have also hosted fundraising events for local charities, to ensure we give back to the community in other ways.
