If we raise more money we will be able to support more craft sessions at suitable social distancing on site here led by professional artists, and be able to spread our marketing across more destination websites in Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire.

Wirksworth Heritage Centre is a cracking little independent museum, café, shop and community hub in the wonderful Derbyshire Dales town of Wirksworth. We’re on the edge of the Peak national park, but have so much more to offer. 1595251004_dscf4256.jpg

The coronavirus pandemic has hit us hard, putting many of our plans for the future in jeopardy, including our plan to bring woolly rhino bones back to the town where they were discovered after over a hundred years in Oxford !1595252940_dsc07538.jpg

Having relocated and recreated our Centre with the help of the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other grants, we now find ourselves with a fantastic facility and great staff team and volunteers but, like so many others, struggling financially. All our planned events and booked group visits, schools, etc have been cancelled and we know it will take some time to get going again.1595252994_ay3a9764.jpg

As a community hub, we provide activities and a welcome space for all, both our local residents and our visitors and our feedback shows that we do it well ! The Centre is fully accessible with a lift, hearing loop, resources for people with ASD and we are currently working on a film with audio description and signed interpretation to bring the Story of Wirksworth alive for those who might otherwise miss out.1595253025_dsc07789.jpg

In our museum, activities, schools programme and through guided walks, even ghost walks, we tell the fascinating story of the award winning town of Wirksworth, how it became a wealthy town, then suffered neglect before finding new life through the Wirksworth Project. We have fun too !1595253101_20200207_165756.jpg

We know that the next year will be very difficult and do not foresee our business getting back to full strength until next summer, having lost our peak season this year. Any money donated will be put towards covering staff and overheads during that time period so that we can reintroduce all of our exciting activities and welcome visitors back. Wirksworth Heritage Centre is a registered charity and we take no profit. The Trustees are all volunteers and any profit goes straight back in to the business for the benefit of the community.

So how will your donation help?  £20 will provide craft resources for a children's activity.  £50 will provide two weeks' supply of PPE for our front of house staff.  £100 will buy the time and expertise of a professional to run a craft workshop.  £250 will help us reach marketing web sites in Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire.

Our vision is to build on the amazing stories of the town, to build back so that we can serve the local community, generate 1595253335_woolly_and_t'owd_men.jpglocal pride, and support other local businesses.  We will then, once again, provide a warm welcome to those seeking to explore Wirksworth and its surrounding countryside.

Here's what some of our supporters say...

'The Rotary Club of Wirksworth is an active supporter of the Heritage Centre.
With an ever expanding display of the long and fascinating history of Wirksworth and the surrounding area, it is a wonderful record for our residents.
It is also an important magnet for the thousands of visitors who come to Wirksworth and the Derbyshire Dales each year.' (Chair, Wirksworth Rotary)

'Run by a really dedicated team the Heritage Centre is fast becoming a really intrinsic part of Wirksworth for many good reasons.  It provides a really well thought out show piece to display the fascinating history of our town, and locality, in an beautifully redesigned historic building.  This has now become a hub for a whole range of cultural and social activities which bring the community together in many different ways.' (Volunteer organiser of evening events)
