The Wild Camel Protection Foundation (WCPF) a UK registered charity Number 10687060, is the only environmental Foundation in the world solely committed to save from extinction the critically endangered wild double-humped camel (Camelus ferus) in its pristine environment in the Gobi deserts of China and Mongolia.. There are under 1000 in the wild. Approximately 600 in China and 400 in Mongolia.
In 2004 the WCPF established a breeding centre in Mongolia with 8 captive wild camels. The Mongolian goverment gave the WCPF 150 acres. There are now 28 wild camels at the centre and we are periodically releasing them into the desert to boost wild numbers. This programme has been highly successful. At the breeding centre we need hay to feed the wild camels over the harsh Mongolian winter months when the temperature goes down to - 40 degrees Celcius. This hay costs us £7500 of which more than 50% consists of transport because grass for hay does not grow in semi-desert conditions. We are funding to raise this amount which is an annual commitment.
