To manage festive events and lights on our High Street with community at its heart.

by WhitSparkle in Whitstable, Kent, England

WhitSparkle community group’s mission is to create, fund and deliver Christmas related events in Whitstable which brings together the people of the Town (including Tankerton, Swalecliffe and Seasalter) to celebrate Togetherness, Festivity and Pride in our Community. We have committed to create a WhitSparkle Christmas Celebration on 1st December 2018 and wish to do so in future years with the support of the town. This event will focus on the children of the town and their families. There will be four Christmas trees at key points through the town from the Harbour to the Umbrella Centre. We will host a lantern lit parade through town, stopping at each one for their own switching-on ceremony. Children will be encouraged to make or bring lanterns with them and there will be music and mulled wine along the way - maybe even some snow! Shops have been encouraged to decorate their windows to bring further sparkle to the route. THE COST: We have been fundraising all year to be sure we can deliver a fun Christmas event and are very grateful to each and every person who has supported with ideas, time and money. We are ALL VOLUNTEERS, however, and none of us professionals in road closures / tree erection or crowd management and for this we need to pay professionals. So far our fees include: Road closures and bus re-routing, event licences, barriers and crowd management, clean-up operations, 15ft trees and lights, radios and high-vis hire, health and safety, performers and many more 'extras' that you would never imagine could be added to your bill for running a community event! We want to bring the Christmas celebration back to Whitstable but we want to do it well and in a way that is sustainable year on year. To do this we need every community-spirited person to donate - any amount will help! And don't forget we also need people - volunteers and supporters - on the day. Ask your friends, get a gang together, what about the grandparents maybe? Without your help we will not be able to commit to delivering a Christmas event year-on-year. Our town deserves to look beautiful and sparkle during the festive season and, together, we can make it happen. Thank you, the WhitSparkle team
