To support people with learning disabilities to stay connected to reduce loneliness & isolation and combat mental health & well being

by Dawn Price in Ferndale, Wales, United Kingdom

We are a team of 7 paid staff two of which have a learning disability and 6 volunteers.

Our Director is a person with a learning disability who has obtained an Horary Fellowship Award from the University of South Wales (then Glamorgan) for her 40+ years in community work.  Our -Chairperson has a learning disability and our Executive Committee is made up of 90% of those who have a learning disability.

We have a membership of 220 people with learning disabilities that live across Rhondda Cynon Taff, Merthyr and Blaenau Gwent.

Covid -19 has been a difficult time for people with learning disabilities they are included in the vulnerable category as defined by Welsh Government.  Since lockdown began in March they have been shielding and continue to shield today.  We have been looking at ways to help people stay connected and came up with the idea to look for funding to provide Ipads

The project My Brilliant Life -  will provide Ipads  to help people with learning disabilities to connect with families and friends, to learn new skills like how to use an iPad, FaceTime, Facebook, Zoom, Teams, emailing, iMessage,  to make sure that they can still take part in co-producing services Locally, Regionally & Nationally so that they are the right services for them.
