Formed in 1976 by Margaret Clement Wantage Gymnastics Centre has been a loved and cherished facility for Wantage and the surrounding area for the past 45 years. The centre provides opportunities and enjoyment for gymnasts of all ages and abilities in a caring environment that nurtures each gymnasts’ passion and love for the sport. When our club was forced to close in March 2020 due to the national lockdown, gymnasts and coaches alike were deeply disappointed.
Wantage Gymnastics Centre is a place where gymnasts from recreational to intermediate and Elite level can push themselves physically and explore what they are capable of in a safe and supportive environment. When the gym shut, the gymnasts lost their opportunity to participate and train in the sport that they love.
Our gymnasts spend many hours a week at the centre training or coaching, and the coaches and their teammates are a second family to them.
For the elite squad girls, who train up to 20 hours a week and represent the centre at a national level, lockdown has meant dashed hopes and dreams. In order to maintain their high level of performance and skill level, the girls must spend many hours on the equipment training their routines. However, since the first lockdown in March 2020, the girls have only been able to train in the gym for a total of 3 months. In these three months’ access to the gym facilities, the girls had to adapt to reduced training hours and other Covid restrictions. The coaches have worked really hard to put together opportunities for gymnasts to train together on zoom, outside when rules allowed and to participate in social events online. The gymnasts have risen to the challenge and to the changes to their training despite the frustration and disappointment they have felt by not being able to achieve their full potential over the past year.
As a club, we also provide the opportunities for young people to become coaches, with the majority taking coaching courses and gaining official coaching qualifications. This provides them with valuable skills they will need for future employment, enhancing the value of the club as a key part of the community.
Only being able to be open for three months, with limited numbers, since the first lockdown in March 2020 has significantly reduced the income of the centre and this is unlikely to improve when the gym reopens. Before lockdown, the club had a stable 500-gymnast membership but we are expecting a sharp decline in this membership when we return. With the rent and running costs of the facility and the coaches, without whom the centre could not function, to pay, we desperately need your support.
In order to raise money for the centre, the gymnasts are running, walking, and cycling the distance between our club and our friends in LA, Broadway Gymnastics School.
Wantage gymnastics centre means a great deal to all those who are involved with the gym whether they are a gymnast, coach, parent/guardian or committee member; please support us by donating to this page so that we may remain open for the years to come and help our gymnasts to continue to participate and achieve whatever their level, reach their full potential, and, most importantly to continue doing something they enjoy. Every donation, be it big or small, will help our club and the gymnasts. We are a charitable organisation and so the money you donate will go directly towards supporting the centre continue to help children experience the sport of gymnastics.
