This General Election is shaping up to be the most important for a generation. What happens could determine the future direction of our country for decades to come. And yet should we place our trust in increasingly tribal and partisan party politicians? All the evidence says no. More and more we are seeing MPs vote not in the interests of their residents locally, but for what they see as being best for their parties.
It is time for a change. And for that reason I have decided to stand as an Independent candidate for the Epsom & Ewell constituency in the forthcoming general election. With over 12 years experience as a local councillor, five of which were spent in the leader role, and being a current deputy chairman of the Local Government Association, I believe I offer a credible Independent alternative to party political candidates; one who can be relied upon to always vote in the interests of residents, putting Epsom & Ewell, not party, first.
Having lived in the area for 37 years, I care passionately about Epsom & Ewell and its people. My only desire would be to work to the best of my ability on behalf of the constituency. I will be free to speak and act for our community in a way that party politicians are not. For me there will be no party whip, no wish for a well paid ministerial position. Just an enthusiasm to work tirelessly alongside like minded MPs of all parties, and of none, representing local people on the issues they tell me are most important to them.
If elected I will be a different type of MP for Epsom & Ewell. I would establish my constituency office in an accessible, central location rather than in a hard to reach, peripheral site. I would set up local ‘Think Tanks’ to involve residents on key issues. Before any important decisions I would ask residents what they think. I would also hold regular ‘Town Hall’ meetings to update residents and seek feedback.
So as you can see I would be your MP, not an MP that is beholden to a party. This campaign is not about getting me a seat; it's about getting the residents of Epsom and Ewell their rightful place in Parliament.
I will also launch a local residents’ expenses panel to scrutinise and veto spending of the MP’s office allowance. I further promise that any increase in MP’s salary during the term will be set aside as a community grant.
