Who are we?
This new shopping experience is the vision of Emma Routen of Yew Tree Herbal Clinic and Lou-Anne Austin of Boheme. We are already independent business owners based in Retford who practise a more ecological way of working, and have noticed the limitations of using big chain supermarkets and discount shops. We feel they just don’t give the public any options when it comes to single use plastic and would like to give the choice back to you the consumer.
Vert will be offering consumables such as rice, pasta, pulses, baking essential, nuts, seeds fruits snacks, tea, coffee, to name a few and all will be unpackaged and plastic free. With state-of-the-art dispensing systems to keep products, fresh, hygienic and easy to decant into containers brought along by the customer or using paper bags provided. The shop will also stock eco-friendly alternatives to everyday items offering refills on laundry detergent and cleaning products.
Vert also intend to supply a full range of refillable, organic, vegan, cruelty free hair care and make up products.
With over 200 responses to a recent online survey we believe we are setting up a shop that many people want to see on the local high street and want this community involvement to continue as Vert grows and develops.
Why open the shop?
After watching the BBC documentary Blue planet, we were both inspired to work in a more ecological way within our current businesses. Aiming to reduce, reuse and recycle more. The amount of single use and non-recyclable packaging in supermarkets is shocking and although major companies have signed a 7-year pledge to reduce this we don’t think this is soon enough.
After researching and being inspired by other Zerowaste shops who are operating successfully and providing this facility within their local communities already, we feel the time is now to offer this to Retford!
This shop will provide a much-needed option for the local community who want to reduce their plastic and food waste by including us within their weekly shop. It will also give local independent traders and businesses within the town centre the opportunity and support to start making little changes to working in a more eco friendly way.
We are passionate about supporting local trade and businesses and increasing activity on the high street. We are actively building relationships with as many of you as we can and will continue to do this as we grow.
What better way to get involved and make a positive impact for our future generations by showing them that this is how you support your local community and treat your planet.
What are we using the money for?
Vert is due to open this May, we have the necessary start-up funds to open but to make the shop more user friendly and have a larger, more diverse range of products, we need your support! Gravity dispensers are a great hygienic way of storing loose products such as grains, cereals, beans, rice, nuts, pastas and sweets. They are great for self-serving and will make the shop more attractive and interactive for you the customer. So, your pledges will help to buy these units along with other fixtures such as coffee grinders, self-service scales, milk dispensers......there is a long list of options we want to provide you in line with our market research.
A lot of our time and money has already gone into bringing Vert to the high street but we also need to prepare for on-going costs associated with the running the shop. All money raised will go into providing a hygienic, minimal waste community shop which everyone will enjoy shopping in.
Please take the time to look at the rewards we are offering and we hope you are tempted to make a pledge and be involved in this exciting new venture.
