I left my last job due to being discriminated against. (My car was egged and I was called names). I am now looking for a new opportunity in life.
I would like to become an upholsterer for the following reasons:
1 - It is a traditional skill which is in danger of dying out. Traditional skills are part of British history and I feel that it is important that they are kept alive as they are part of our amazing heritage.
2 - I want to gain the skills to be able to set up a new business. Hopefully this will grow and I can then employ others from the community and help to improve opportunities in the local area.
3 - I am mixed race. There are very few minorities working in upholstery and I would like to alter this and open it up as something that other BAME people can consider as a viable career. I will promote opportunities and offer internships and apprenticeships if my business takes off.
4 -I want to hold workshops to people in the local community who come from disadvantaged backgrounds in order to pass on skills and also with a view to wellbeing and to break down barriers. I feel that craft groups in neighbourhoods are a way of creating togetherness and can assist in enhancing peoples wellbeing.
I am creative and hardworking and would make a success of the opportunity if I was able to partake on a course. I have found one in Derby and been accepted. I cannot afford the fees however. If I am able to crowdfund the fees I will pay it forward as described above.
