We are a group of young arts sector workers looking to transform the basement of a terraced house in south Manchester into a contemporary art space. We plan to put on exhibitions and events every month, which sounds like a lot of fun, but the shows would also be used as opportunities to raise awareness and money for charities. For our first exhibition, we are working with three very talented Manchester based artists and half the money we are currently trying to raise would be used to purchase materials to initially alter the space. We want to change it from a dingy dank basement to a slightly less dingy less dank basement in which these artists can create and then display their work. The other half of our funds would be used to actually pay the artists for their work as, although it sounds like common sense, we believe that paying people for their work is super important and we want our exhibitions to be paid jobs rather than voluntary opportunities.
Amongst other things, we hope that by taking contemporary art out of its metropolitan gallery home and placing it in the community we can engage with people who are not normally part of the cultural conversation in Manchester and also raise money for some amazing causes along the way!
