For many of us, the wish to live stylishly is incompatible with the desire to be more sustainable. It seems difficult to find cool clothing and exciting interior pieces without breaking the planet, or the bank.
What exactly is Ugly Bone?
Ugly Bone was born out of a compulsion to create fun, useful things out of ethical, sustainable and/or pre-existing materials. Starting with hair accessories made out of reclaimed and deadstock fabrics, we will one day create handmade, original pieces of home furnishings, to lessen the load on our struggling environment.
Living colourfully shouldn't cost the earth.
As well as creating pieces ourselves, we want to educate people to take the reins and use existing materials more consciously, by hosting workshops, webinars and providing online learning materials to allow anyone to make better choices.
Who the heck created Ugly Bone?
That would be me. Hi, I'm Elena. I'm passionate about taking care of our planet, particularly the animals on it. To me, Ugly Bone is a way for me to revitalise objects and materials, keeping them out of landfills and fly-tipping sites, and putting them in people’s homes to be cherished for years to come.
In the day, I work in publishing, and by night my time is split between working in a factory to raise start-up capital for this venture, and sitting at the sewing machine to get my first products ready for sale.
Oh, cool. Why did you call it Ugly Bone?
Good question! You know how when someone says something amusing you might say it tickled your funny bone? Well, my products are a bit like that.
Have you ever looked at something and said “It’s so weird… I LOVE IT!”? If you have, then you have got an Ugly Bone, and you are going to love our stuff.
So, why are you crowdfunding?
I could raise all the money I need to really get Ugly Bone up and running by working at the factory, but it would take me more than six years. By supporting Ugly Bone, you will help me to:
- Accelerate the business's growth
- Cover overheads that I’m currently paying for out-of pocket
- Hire a dedicated workspace and get us out of family members' sheds and kitchens
- Hire an accountant to take significant time and stress off my plate
- Pay deposits for markets and pop-up shops
- Pay for marketing to launch the business
- Buy and insure a small van to pick up pieces of furniture
What is the big picture here?
Reductively, I want to live in a nicer world. I want to make beautiful, ethical things, and have the flexibility to help more in my community. I have always been socially minded, whether it’s by taking care of unwanted/neglected animals or only buying pre-owned furniture and clothing to lessen my burden on our stressed and dying ecosystem.
What’s the smaller picture?
