After more than 10 years working in privately owed but accredited community projects in the province of Rome in Italy, I have identified many consequences of little or sometimes no funding for even the most primary needs of the rehabilitation service beneficiaries. The "clients", who are mentally and physically handicapped adults, follow well structured programmes designed by community service professionals, all approved by the local social services. Those resident in rehabilitation centres and care homes participate in various activities designed to help them maintain or achieve their autonomy in their daily lives. The specific activities serve as therapy towards the main goal of rehabilitation and consequent reintegration in the community. My job as a social healthcare worker involves helping our "hosts" carry out these activities. Sometimes there is need to physically transport them from their residents (in centres or at their family residences) to places where their prescribed services are offered. Therapeutic activities range from farming whereby the patients get in touch with animals and crops, horse riding schools, swimming and other sporting activities. Due to insufficient funding, we are always challenged by lack of transportation to reach the various services ready to collaborate with us in various activities. My project involves acquiring a 5 to 7 seater vehicle, even used but in good working conditions to offer transport services to and from these services in an organised manner. I can personally manage the transport service privately in agreement with the various rehabilitation centres available locally, to be carried in different times of the day. My aim is to raise roughly 10000 Euros for the project.
