We are a money and debt advice centre and would like to employ a trainee adviser as demand for our free service has increased due to Covid.

New stretch target

If we secure extra funding, we would be able to continue to employ and develop our trainee to help even more people.

'I need help. I am working, but my wages have been cut and I cannot cover my costs. I can't get help online as I can't afford the internet anymore. I need to see someone face to face.' This was a call we took on Monday. After an initial telephone conversation we discovered that the caller has council tax arrears, rent arrears and credit card debt. He felt he was sinking. We assured him that we could help but that due to current demand he would need to ring back on Friday to see if we could give him an appointment.

Ablewell was established in 2012 with the aim of supporting the people of Walsall with debt and benefit problems.  We are people-centred and we like to help people to develop the skills to manage their own financial situation in the future.

We have a holistic approach, so someone coming to see us would see the same adviser about anything they needed help with and they could access our foodbank or job club if they needed to.

In recent years, we have been helping more and more people and we know this will only increase as people unfortunately lose their jobs or struggle financially due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  We want to employee a trainee adviser so that more people can access advice to helps make things a little easier for them when they are struggling.

We have a waiting list for appointments, with people currently waiting a minimum of two weeks. We would like to have more capacity to enable us to respond more quickly. The Institute for Fiscal Studies has reported that households in the poorest fifth have been hit hardest in terms of their earnings, with a fall of around 15%.  Walsall has been badly affected. According to the Just Finance Foundation, the West Midlands has the third highest level of debt of any region in the UK at 18 per cent. Walsall has 20.6%. We need your help to enable is to offer more help.
