Our aim is to extend our free mobility scooter hire scheme to the RSPB Scotland Loch Leven visitor centre and nature reserve, and to replace scooters, at two other loch-side locations, which have reached the end of their life.
The Loch Leven Heritage Trail is a circular track around the beautiful Loch Leven National Nature Reserve. Much of the National Nature Reserve is managed by Scottish Natural Heritage and is internationally renowned for numbers of different bird species that visit throughout the year. SNH maintain wildlife viewing hides at 3 locations around the trail which are open to all and accessible to the scooters.
On its 13 mile route, this easy access trail passes through a whole variety of different wildlife habitats and offers some spectacular vistas of Loch Leven & the Lomond Hills. The trail also passes through the RSPB nature reserve. A new underpass will soon be opening below a main road which has hitherto separated the loch-side trail from the RSPB visitor centre, café, shop and toilets. The underpass will for the first time make the whole nature reserve accessible for wheelchair and trail scooter users visiting RSPB Scotland Loch Leven, and enable those using scooters hired from other locations on the trail to access the visitor centre, café, shop and toilets.
Being in nature is important to both health and wellbeing. Removing the barriers and challenges to those with mobility issues will ensure trail scooter users can now also enjoy the beautiful countryside at RSPB Scotland Loch Leven, thus bringing currently disadvantaged people closer to nature.
For the past 10 years, the Kinross-shire Partnership has sponsored free use of trail scooters 7 days per week, for use by locals and visitors alike, from Loch Leven's Larder and the Boathouse at Kinross Pier. The addition of a third hire point at RSPB Scotland Loch Leven will significantly extend accessibility and help everyone to enjoy the benefits this brings.
Please help us to realise this aim by making a donation, no matter how small, to help ensure everyone can enjoy this wonderful area and all it has to offer.
