For nearly thirty years, I've been clearing the ancient mule tracks of Skopelos island. They used to be regularly in use by foot and mule traffic but locals now get around by car. However, these trails are excellent for hiking.
In the beginning, it was just me, a pair of clippers and a few friends. I then found workaway.info and now arrange volunteers from all over the world to come to the island and help. We provide accommodation and meals in exchange for their work. At first, it was just one helper at a time as my house is very small but now I have help from the Hotels Union, who kindly donate a room each per week during the clearing season. So there can be 3 volunteers at a time plus anyone local who cares to join in. I have personally funded the purchase of the tools and gloves but we need replacements as well as more waymarkers. I'd also like to buy a chain saw as moving large, fallen trees is very heavy and difficult work when you only have a hand saw.
My aim is to keep open all the heritage trails of Skopelos Island and to make us the destination of choice for hikers from all over the world.
