A 'people's project'
About the project
At the end of March 2019, all remaining Panavia Tornado Aircraft will be retired and decommissioned by the RAF. But that should not be the end of the story. We believe that we should keep the memory alive by sharing the adventures Tom has had during almost 40 years of service and before he hangs up his boots and flying gloves for the last time.
The story will be told in language that children will understand and by presenting it as a beautifully illustrated, historically accurate picture book, it will be ideal for sharing with grown-ups, at school and read-aloud story time.
Everyone who pledges...
Will receive one of 1,000 first editions, signed by both the Author and Illustrator. In addition to this, if we achieve our target, the publishers will donate 50 copies of RAF100 for Children (a book celebrating 100-years of the Royal Air Force) to The Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. Any money raised over our target will be donated to the Demelza House Children's Hospice in Ashford, Kent.
Keeping the memories alive
What better way to keep the memories alive than by sharing them with future generations in a bespoke children's picture book? A fun and informative way to pass on the past to our future!
What will the money we raise be used for?
Our target of £9,000 will pay for:
- Printing of 1,000 copies of Tom Tornado (28-page full colour paperback, 350gsm gloss laminate covers with 200gsm inner pages)
- Author and Illustrator fees to write, illustrate, edit, layout and format book ready for print
- Allocation of ISBN and registration of title through Nielsen BookData
- Postage and Packaging
- Crowdfunding fees
- A donation to Demelza House Children's Hospice
The people behind the project:
Fairyfaye Publications Ltd
Fairyfaye Publications Ltd are a team of highly professional individuals who have achieved No.1 status in the world of children's books. Their credits number many 'world firsts' including making history by becoming the first publishers to be granted a licence by the Ministry of Defence for a children’s book for RAF100 for Children, the official and celebratory book to commemorate the Royal Air Force celebrating its 100th birthday.
They have 5-best-selling books to their name and have produced commissions for high-end clients and famous organisations.
Using their experience, skill and talent, they will work closely with the Technical Advisor to produce an engaging, educational and entertaining book all about the Tornado and its career in flight.
A 6-year-old child was recommended some Fairyfaye publications and shared one at school after Father Christmas gave him a copy of Sally B & Me... An inquisitive child with a love of aeroplanes, he asked the question, “Will there be a book about the Tornado as it’s being decommissioned?”
Nigel got to hear this and it kicked off a series of lively and exciting conversations with Fairyfaye and friends: “Could we do it…? Should we do it…? How can we do it...?”
The initial idea gained speed like it was preparing for take-off... Nigel suggested that perhaps we could crowdfund it and here we are!
We are privileged to have a GR1/GR4 Navigator with over 3000 hours and 300 Operational sorties worth of experience on the team!
What does your support for our project get you?
Each pledge of £9 or more will receive a limited, first edition copy of Tom Tornado signed by both the Author and Illustrator. You’ll also get a warm fuzzy feeling because you've done something to help keep the memory of the Tornado alive for future generations!
In addition, you’ll be helping children that need support the most – either by providing them with new books to read during their time at Great Ormond Street Hospital or by supporting the fundraising efforts of Demelza House Children's Hospice.
If the project doesn't reach its target you won't be charged but, like us, you will probably be very disappointed! We only receive the funds you pledge if we meet 100% of our goal, so please don't delay! Pledge today!
One last thing…
Even if you can't pledge, please consider sharing our page and spreading the word about Tom Tornado!
