To enhance and enrich the lives of residents; those with dementia or requiring full-time nursing, through the creation of a sensory garden.

by Friends of Ticehurst Care Home in Aldershot, England, United Kingdom

The Friends of Ticehurst is an 8-strong fund raising team inspired to enhance and enrich the lives of our residents. This project's aim is to create a sensory garden with a little ice cream parlour where there's presently a 500 square metre, currently under-utilised patch of ground. The literature on the benefits of such an outdoor space is extensive, but to name a few:

  • residents will be able to walk around freely using wheelchair- and walker-friendly pathways;
  • the creation of raised vegetable, herb and flower beds to attract wild life and encourage residents' participation in planting, weeding and reaping;
  • mental health and dementia scientists and organisations are in complete agreement when it comes to the value of being out in the open, in a garden:
    • a quiet spot to form new social bonds and enjoy moments with loved ones - for this purpose we'll provide pergolas and seating areas;
    • prompting memory recall and creating a feeling of "future" through involvement in seasonal planning;
    • the feeling of pride associated with contributing herbs and vegetables to the home's kitchen and the consequent dicussions around cooking and the enjoyment of food;
    • a reduction in anxiety and stress and an improvement in concentration and connection with past memories;
    • lowering of heart rate and blood pressure;
    • olfactory stimulation triggering memories and prompting mood improvement;
  • an outside space to sit and appreciate sunny moments in the garden - just enjoying an ice cream, having a cup of tea, playing a game or joining an arts and crafts session;
  • the installation of a summerhouse with the appropriate equipment and seating, to serve as an "ice cream parlour" or for birthdays and other get-togethers;
  • additional seating around the trees will afford residents the opportunity to quietly enjoy the surroundings;
  • the creation of additional space will afford an outdoor moment to residents who are otherwise largely restricted to the interior of the facility;
  • we plan to include the greater community to raise dementia awareness..... tea with local firefighters, games mornings with folk from similar institutions and church groups, Moms+Tots tea in the garden, local folk bringing small pets to visit, engaging garden enthusiasts to spend time with our residents, etc; and
  • with the Covid-19 restrictions in Hampshire County Council homes permitting only outdoor visits for the indefinite future, the realisation of this project becomes imperative.
