SALSA (St Austell Library Support Association) is looking for funding towards our new project “There But Not There”.
A commemoration of all of those that took part in WW1, whether they were wounded, served in any service – military or civilian, or paid the ultimate sacrifice.
We would like to purchase 2 statues of Tommy's, one to place outside the library on the lawn and another to go in a prominent position in St Austell Town. These status are made of aluminium, 6ft high from the Royal British Legion https://shop.therebutnotthere.org.uk and cost £750 each. We would also host an exhibition of WW1 artefacts, photos, memories and invite local school children to visit to learn about the involvement of Cornwall in the war.
We have contacted all the armed services both senior and cadets and they are in full support, as are the RBL and SSAFA. They have suggested that they would attend a parade and ceremony in full uniform to unveil the statues; we would then host a tea dance and invite the older members of the community to join us and be entertained by the local community ukulele group and a musician with a rendition of war time songs.
We also anticipate other organised events including a WW1 re-enactment performance, a play written by a local play-write; Richard Pears, a workshop and concert in partnership with Bath Symphonia and local schools. We hope to record the social history in a Remembrance Book to be published for prosperity.
