To provide support for anyone affected by cancer offering practical ways of enhancing physical, psychological and emotional well-being.

by The Mulberry Centre in Isleworth, England, United Kingdom

One in two people are expected to develop cancer at some point in their lives (Macmillan “Cancer Then Now” Report, 2016). A diagnosis of cancer affects the whole person, their family and friends, in many different ways. Your support can make a real difference to people affected by cancer at a time when it is needed most.

Our project aims to provide support and information for anyone affected by cancer who lives in west and south-west London, offering practical ways of enhancing physical, psychological and emotional wellbeing. We support people with a cancer diagnosis, their family and friends, carers and those bereaved by cancer. The combination of information, support, self-management and relaxation helps people feel in control. It helps them make the right decisions to manage the physical and mental trauma of a cancer diagnosis.

The activities provided will include:
• counselling and/or coaching sessions
• support groups (different groups for patients, carers and those bereaved)
• complementary therapies (massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, shiatsu and acupuncture)
• ongoing one-to-one support on a drop-in basis
• a well-stocked library
• information on relevant welfare and benefits
• information workshops (e.g. on nutrition, dealing with stress, work and cancer, welfare and benefits)
• well-being classes (tai chi, yoga, relaxation, pilates)
• creative and social activities (art, writing, book club, walking group).

People are also welcome to drop in for a cup of tea, enjoy the tranquil atmosphere, relax on the sofas, enjoy the garden or use the library facilities.

Most of the people we support are from the London Boroughs of Hounslow, Richmond and Ealing. However, we are open to all, regardless of postcode or hospital of diagnosis. Last year, 500 individuals registered as new users, taking the total number of our registered clients to 3,245 (1,749 patients, 904 carers, 531 bereaved and 60 family members and friends of someone with cancer). A total of 791 unique individuals were provided with a care and support programme in the year to March 2018.

An individual support programme is developed with each client, based on their specific needs. This may include up to seven one-one counselling sessions, six sessions of therapies, and participation in 18 wellbeing classes and access to all (c.200) informative, creative and social activities and workshops that take place each year, as well as the ability to drop in for a cup of tea and a chat whenever needed.

Your donations will enable us to provide critical support and information at a time of trauma and crisis to our clients.  For every additional £468 raised through Crowdfunding, we can provide a programme of support for one new person who has cancer crashing into their lives. If we raise £18,720 we can support 40 new clients. For every person affected by cancer we can support, they will be better able to take control of their situation and manage their health and wellbeing.
