We target those who would not typically access professional training. Since opening in 2017 we have welcomed over 150 students and given them the chance to experience Professional training in Dance, Drama, Singing, Music Production and Musical Theatre. We work with children and young people primarily from the estates in and around Oval in Kennington. We build confidence, creativity and community cohesion through the arts and provide a safe place outside of school hours with positive mentors
In the years since we have opened we have produced 3 full scale Musicals performed to family and friends, two terms worth of 'Short Films' and various variety performances. We have also helped to produce and perform at 'The West End Gala' at The Fairfield Halls in Croydon for the Mayors Charities. Our target is to give our young people the same, or better, opportunities that they would have could they afford to attend a traditional stage school franchise. However, without the fees that are usually paid to a traditional stage school we need to raise funds another way.
We have worked hard for our young people during this pandemic but it has hit our organisation hard. Without further funding we will not survive another year as our capacity has been drastically reduced and our numbers of students needing scholarships or extra support to attend has increased more than 150%
We believe that there isn't enough Diversity in The Arts partly due to many children being priced out of quality extra-curricular Arts provisions when they are young and disengagement from their families. We encourage our students families to engage in theatre to encourage their children and often take students and parents to experience the west end.
Many of our students have remained with us since we first opened and we have recently helped two gain funded places at Full Time Drama School. Others have performed in The West End in shows such as 'TINA' and 'On Your Feet' or on television in commercials and even in a SKY TV series and, most recently, a student has bagged a lead role in a new CBBC series.
The Boury Academy provides a chance to gain new skills, a supportive social circle, adult role models, a safe place to be and is a chance for young people to escape their own reality and play.
We are fundraising to help us survive, grow and build through the COVID19 Pandemic over the next 12 months.
Can you help?
