The Train Project

We did it
On 9th October 2011 we successfully raised £1,240 with 30 supporters in 30 days

I would like to invite you to become a part of a unique and unusual collaborative social experience. The Train Project is an interactive and transient journey that aims to capture the brief encounters we have with strangers in everyday life. The performance event will commence in September when I embark on a two week continuous journey across the UK by train, speaking to the people I meet on my journey about the places they come from and where they are going. The Train Project is an artist driven initiative aiming to provide a meeting ground for the multiple users of trains and people across internet networks. The project explores the ways in which these everyday spaces can be used as a challenging environment to address issues regarding mobility and connectivity, as well as, to expand notions of what a performance can be. Along these networks, people move around and engage with their surroundings. The train project sparks an investigation of these familiar places, asking you to direct me in my helping us to rethink or re-imagine our experiences when in motion. There are two strands to this project that will run simultaneously: The first is the physical journey; these are the interactions I will have with people face-to-face, in the carriages and on platforms. The second is the virtual journey; these are the interactions I will have with people through the internet using online social media sites such as facebook and Twitter. These two methods of connectivity aim to cross over and tie together the people online with the people offline, by asking those in physical space to join the online site and those online to meet up in physical space, creating and mapping a network of people and places along the journey. Crowdfunders are an integral part of this project, not only for the donations that will provide the basis for this project, but as a direct input into the points of departure and navigation during my travel. Your contribution opens up a meeting point between us where I can thank you in person and in exchange, reward you with a pledge where I deliver something for you to another person, anywhere in the UK, as a service for your contribution. This invites funders, but is not obligatory, to be directly involved in the project s process and further strengthens the online and offline points of connection during the project. There will be regular updates on the project s blogsite, including images, texts and film footage, which will be captured on my travels. This process of documentation will be produced as artworks after the project ends. You can be the first owners of some of these artworks which you can secure copies of through funding this project. Details of these items are located in the rewards section of this page. To make this project come to life, I need your help. Your donations will enable me to purchase an All Line Rover 14 day pass for travel (covering the seated sleeper services so I can travel and rest by night), a good quality internet dongle and credit for the online connection, a small fee to a programmer to maintain the project site, a food budget for 2 meals a day within UK stations and materials for printing and publishing the outcomes of the project. I am aiming to raise £1200 to cover the project and I hope you can get involved and join me on the journey.
