The Therapy Garden is a horticulture and education charity that uses gardening to generate positive change. We work with adults and teenagers with learning difficulties, physical disabilities and a range of mental health challenges. We aim to help our service users improve psychologically, physically and socially and provide the opportunity to enter into further education, training and employment.
The Therapy Garden is planning to open a community café that would be open on a Saturday when the charity is not open to clients and the building is vacant for use. The cafe would be run by volunteers, and some of our clients. Potentially more clients in the future could also work at the café, gaining vital employment skills, as well as improving confidence and social skills.
The Therapy Garden’s onsite shop would be open at the same time as the café, and this would be run by the charity’s volunteers.
Benefit to the community and beyond
The local community will be able to enjoy having a local cafe in which they can meet and socialise at, enjoy the garden, purchase produce from the charity, and support the community through. Group visits from local charities and support groups can arrange visits to the café and garden, as the disabled access at the centre and garden make the venue suitable to be visited by all. Visitors can enjoy the tranquil gardens as well as visiting the shop and café.
What we need
We have already obtained some much needed funding to buy initial equipment such as table cloths, toaster, tea pots, and crockery, but what we really need is a coffee machine. A coffee machine that would be suitable for the cafe are expensive items, and so we ask if anyone would mind kindly supporting us to buy it. Once we can make a proper cup of coffee we will be ready to open!
