The Real Junk Food Project Needs You!
Help us raise £4,000 to bring a thriving waste food cafe to Watford!!
The concept is a simple one:
We will legally intercept food (waste) from supermarkets, restaurants and other sources, cook it up into delicious meals, and serve them to anyone and everyone on a pay-as-you-feel basis.
Who are we?
Random Cafe TRJFP Watford is a not for profit project. We aim to reduce food waste, campaign to make our food system fairer and more sustainable, and support our local community.
In the UK 15 million tonnes of perfectly edible food ends up in landfill each year, some of it before even reaching supermarket shelves.
What are we going to do?
Our mission is simple - to feed bellies, not bins!! We do this by working with local supermarkets, businesses, shops, food producers and farms - intercepting food that would otherwise be thrown away, reducing needless landfill and feeding hungry bellies with delicious food instead.
Random Cafe is something really different for our town, it's about inclusion, community and sustainability. We want to hold some pop up events in and around Watford. We want to create a cool pop up cafe and food boutique, where the food and atmosphere are great, a place where people want to be, where all of the meals just happen to be made from waste ingredients, and served on a pay-as-you-feel-basis.
Why are we doing this?
We want to create a social spaces for Watford with a great new concept; pay-as-you-feel. At The Real Junk FoodProject Watford, absolutely all of our food is eaten on a pay-as-you-feel (PAYF) basis. PAYF means that customers can offer a financial donation to the project of what they feel a meal is worth, give whatever they can, or can recognise the value of a meal by donating their time, energy, skills and support. The aim is to make a truly inclusive community space that will value the contribution of those who have little or no money - people before profits.
There are currently around 8 million people in the UK who are in poverty so deep that they can't afford enough food, let alone access healthy, nutritious food. At the same time huge amounts of perfectly edible food is wasted. We think this is bonkers, and we want to fight to change it.
Supporting Our Planet
Random Cafe's aim is to reduce food waste, and its huge environmental impact. Around 15 million tonnes of food is wasted each year in the UK alone, and the vast majority of that food is perfectly edible. When we waste food we also waste land, water, diesel used in farming, packaging, energy to refrigerate and so much more. The lowest carbon, most sustainable thing we can do with food that is going to go to waste is put it in a belly, any belly, rather than a bin, any bin (landfill, anaerobic digestion or compost).
What will the money be used for?
The Crowdfunder will pay to get the project up and running. It will provide the money to rent premise, buy a small van and tea, coffee, sugar and any small items of equipement we haven't been able to source.
How else can you help?
Every pledge and contribution is valuable to our project, but we know that people don't always have money to spare. If this is the case, there are lots of other ways that you can help us to continue to do great things in the community.
Donations of table clothes, paper napkins, coffee, tea, sugar would also be gratefully received. Perhaps you know of a community hall that would like to donate there venue for a few hours a month on a saturday? Please let us know, or recommend us to people who might be able able to help out.
As we expand as an organisation, we'd like to continue to improve how we do things, how we manage what we do and how we communicate what we are up to. If you have skills in areas like social media, graphic design, communications, project management, fundraising etc please let us know know you'd like to contribute to what we do.
If you like what we are trying to do, be sure to tell your friends, family and colleagues about our project, keep in touch and share our posts on social media.
