We are a local volunteer group that’s the main objective is to tidy up our community by litter picking. Our founder Michelle Medler started her campaign in January 2018 to clear up Kidderminster, Stourport and Bewdley areas and started making a difference throughout these communities. Over this year she has created a Facebook page that highlights the events our volunteers arrange to tidy up parts of our community that is badly affected by litter. This Facebook page this month has successfully past 1000 followers.
Michelle is a very inspiring young lady and has been overwhelmed with volunteers, local businesses and general public post on her Facebook page or the Keeping Kidderminster and surrounding areas clean and tidy page. Take a look on Facebook and see for yourself what amazing work gets carried out each day trying to tidy up our community through The Pickup artists members. Michelle has set up council contacts to collect the litter straight after The pickup Artists events and they have even sent council staff on a few occasions to help.
The idea is always to highlight the amount of litter in our community, many posts from our volunteers each day highlight what they have collected on a dog walk, walk to work etc. The litter pick up efforts makes us very proud of what can be achieved when we work as a team and is really addictive at times.
The reason I am applying for fundings is that our overall target is to be able to target schools, colleges, brownie and scouting groups etc and encourage these groups to have The Junior pickup artists education through exclusive hands-on events. Targeting these areas through education means our youth are taught the extent of litter pollution and generally care more about the community they live in to protect their local nature reserves and the canals and river Severn nearby. Plus making their home/community a nicer and cleaner place to be.
In order for us to do more, we need equipment, Litter pickers, child-sized litter pickers, hoops, black bags, children's gloves and also a chance to promote our cause more through leaflets, signs and stickers. The pickup artists are achieving so much in the community areas they clean and its attracting attention with amazing comments by community members, local newspapers and social media.
We were sponsored by the council in February who brought all our equipment and unfortunately, this funding is no longer available through council funds. Our equipment is worn or broken and being a volunteer group with no income our chances of replacing these items are limited.
Our last successful project was to adopt the canal passing through Kidderminster and we worked with the canal and rivers trust. They provided us with the knowledge and skills to safely litter pick the canal paths. As a group, we meet up once a week and following the safety regulations put in place and we collect and dispose of the litter collected.
The equipment is based in Kidderminster and when events are running in other areas volunteers need to collect the equipment from Kidderminster and this is a cost to the individual volunteer running the event. We would like to provide area team leaders with equipment to save their time and travel expenses.
Overall our main objected is to achieve a cleaner town and build awareness of our everyday battle of litter picking to the individuals that drop the litter in the first place.
please vote and help us support a cleaner, litter free and environmentally friendly community.
