Writer & Directors Statement
Hello, my name is Zak Watson and I am the writer & director of The Light Follows. My passion for film was the result of myself collaborating my love for painting and making music.
After winning best short film at my local film festival with my first experimental short film made whilst studying art, my most recent projects have been selected for film festivals around England, America and Italy.
The Light Follows shall be my third and most immense film I have directed and I am excited to begin the production process and share the film with you soon!
This surreal mind bending thriller is the creation of a team of passionate, enthusiastic filmmaking individuals specialising in different areas within the production. Because of the difficulties of Covid19, our team has had to quickly adapt their way of completing pre production work to satisfy the restrictions of Covid19.
Although tough, the pre production work so far has shown our quick thinking and adaptation to such difficult times to ensure that our passion for this project can run ahead smoothly and safely. In such a hard time it is no secret that this is not going to be an easy task, however with our drive and your contribution we can continue with the progress we have already made and get a step closer to our finished product.
I’d like to thank you for your time reading this statement, I hope you can contribute even the slightest to making our filmmaking dreams a reality.
We are a group of filmmakers and actors from around the country driven by the love of creating memorable moments on screen. We believe that film is a collaborative process that requires passionate individuals from each department to work as a team to make a successful production.
Our cast are past students and current company members at the National Youth Film Academy. They have already succeeded in the psychological film genre showcasing their talent in past films that have been selected for film festivals across the world.
Our crew comprises of a careful selection of musicians, artists, camera & lighting specialists, producers, set & costume designers and audio specialists. This crew is individually driven by the passion that holds them to their particular subject.
The Light Follows is a surreal mind-bending thriller film that explores the abstract display of anxieties hidden deep within a man’s mind.
One early morning the story's protagonist Jack wakes up from a vicious nightmare. He is drawn to the power of a particular box that lays across from him on his floor. Unable to resist the power Jack opens the box. We travel through the box and out into a very specific moment in time, Jack’s most traumatic experience...
When Jack’s girlfriend, Jennifer is one step closer to achieving her dream of becoming a successful singer, Jack becomes jealous of the interaction between Jennifer and the flirtatious record label owner Sean. Jack immediately questions the trust within his relationship. Instead of expressing his inner feelings to Jennifer, Jack behaves erratically which consequently influences Jennifer’s fatal ending.
However the story travels deeper into the subconscious dream-like state of our main character Jack. The story frequently visits a mysterious, dark room in which abstract visualisations of Jack’s anxieties play out in front of us. In the room sits a dome headed man, this is a visual personification of how Jack views himself. The idea that a man is worthless without the features to express emotion to another person.
This story promises no ordinary experience; an exciting transcend into cinema in its purest, artistic form.
Considering the film dives into so many dark and abstract themes, our cinematographer and director have been working extensively to achieve a clear visual style. Our director shall produce a painting for each scene that translates his visual intentions to a medium in which our cinematographer can then bring to the screen.

Hi, I’m Alice Bolshaw, the producer of The Light Follows. During my Digital Media Production degree at Oxford Brookes, I have thrived during the role of a producer on all my encounters. However The Light Followers is definitely going to be the best project I have had the privilege of producing.
During a global pandemic there is definitely a different element of our film we need to account for, such as PPE and measures to keep us all safe, making our budget increased by these measures, shown in the costing pie chart below.
The Light Follows will be my third professional production I will have produced and I have never been more ambitious to produce a film with such a meaning behind it.
The smallest donations to our production will be so greatly appreciated and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your sponsors. I look forward to showing you the final film.
We have decided to aim to raise £1800. The vast majority shall be going straight into the production in order for us to pay for the following:
Producing a film during COVID-19 has already proved a challenge and it is no doubt that whilst filming on set it shall be no different. We have slightly raised our budget accordingly to take into account the equipment needed in order to keep us protected from the virus. Therefore kindly ask you to make even the smallest donation to ensure that we can produce this film comfortably as well as safely.

We also plan to give back to mental health charities that specialise in suicide prevention and depersonalisation & derealisation disorder.
Depersonalization-derealization disorder occurs when you persistently or repeatedly have the feeling that you're observing yourself from outside your body or you have a sense that things around you aren't real, or both. Feelings of depersonalisation and derealisation can be very disturbing and may feel like you're living in a dream.
Along with this we shall also be donating to suicide prevention charities in the hope to raise awareness and provide people with the confidence to get in touch with specific organisations if they ever need to seek help.
We hope that by contributing some of the money given to us by you, we can make a positive change to the mental wellbeing of particular people suffering from mental health issues.
Thank you taking the time out of your day to read through our project! We are extremely grateful for any contribution you have made no matter how big or small.
We look forward to showing you the final film.
