Eleanor Marx, youngest daughter of renowned historian and philosopher Karl Marx, was a woman far ahead of her time. A social reformer, an early feminist, a passionate union activist and translator and curator of her father's writings, she styled herself as 'The Jewess of Jews Walk' when she first moved to Sydenham in 1896. Sadly, her common-law husband, the philandering actor Dr Edward Aveling, is widely believed to have driven her to despair, leading to her tragic suicide in 1898. Now Sydenham-based theatre company Spontaneous Productions - well known for its previous shows about World War 1 (Till the Boys Come Home) and its open-air shows at The Dolphin pub - has commissioned playwright Lucy Kaufman to write an original stage play about the last few tragic days of Eleanor's life, set during the short period she lived at 7 Jews Walk, Sydenham. The play -  a powerful, claustrophobic and gripping drama - will be staged in a fully-mounted professional production Upstairs at the Sydenham Centre in the autumn of 2017.
