We did it
On 4th June 2016 we successfully raised £16,138 with 321 supporters in 28 days

Bringing together young people & the wider public with artists, mental health practitioners & heritage experts to improve mental wellbeing.

by TheHorsfall in Manchester

New stretch target

We've reached our original goal - but it's not over yet!

If we raise another £3,000 we will use it to landscape the small courtyard between The Horsfall and 42nd Street. It's a small space but with your help we can get some hardy green plants in there- and fulfill our mission to work with nature as well as art.

£3,000 will be enough for landscaping whilst our builders are on site and for buying all the plants we need as well as a little bit of furniture too. It'll be a relaxing space for young people as well as somewhere that can be used by anyone who comes to The Horsfall.

We need YOU to help us make this happen, and as well as that inevitable feel good feeling; you can select a lovely reward too!

The Horsfall... A new creative programme bringing together young people and the wider public with artists, mental health practitioners and heritage experts to improve mental wellbeing.

Who are we?

The Horsfall is a creative venue and programme by 42nd Street; an innovative and award winning mental health charity with an excellent 35 year track record.  42nd Street supports young people aged 11-25 years with their emotional well-being and mental health, promoting choice and creativity. We champion young person centred approaches that demonstrate local impact and have national significance.

What is The Horsfall?

The Horsfall is about beautiful art with a useful purpose. We believe that access to art and nature can radically change people’s lives. The venue and programme we have planned will enable us to work with more young people in new ways and to extend the impact of what we do to the wider public.

We’ve been inspired by the little known Ancoats Art Museum; a unique social and artistic experiment established at the end of the 19th Century by Victorian visionary Thomas Horsfall. The Ancoats Art Museum created opportunities for the most disenfranchised people of Manchester to experience beauty in their lives through visits to the gallery, attendance at concerts, classes in woodwork, music and dressmaking and countryside rambles.

We’ve taken his ideas and updated them for the 21st century. In our first year we will work with young people, professional artists, mental health professionals, makers and facilitators to create enthralling and powerful experiences for young people and audiences alike. We have plans for an immersive theatre installation with young carers, public art pieces, mindfulness and art sessions and even a project to invent a new flavour of ice cream.

We will lead the way local and nationally in how we work with young people to reinterpret stories from the past, their own stories and to imagine stories yet to come.

 What you can do

  1. Crowdfunding will give us that last piece of the jigsaw to make this amazing project a reality, but if we dont hit our £15,000 target we get NOTHING... So, if you are yet to pledge we still need you!

Pledge what you can and choose one of our fantastic rewards. They give you a real flavour of what we are about and every penny will contribute to finishing the restoration of The Horsfall into a useful and beautiful space; a resource for young people and the communities around us.

  2. Tell other people about our campaign through Twitter, Facebook and all those social media platforms.

  3. Take inspiration from the words of Thomas Horsfall:

“Be aware of beauty and the wider world, it will give you the mental resources needed to find your way in life.”

The Rewards

No matter how much you can afford to pledge, we've got some great rewards for you. Of course, contributing to making The Horsfall a reality is a reward in itself, but we also want to say thank you so we’ve used our creative skills to make you some beautiful things that money can’t buy anywhere else. We have had some great friends help us out too, so we have made sure to pay this forward and support our local businesses in the design and production of these rewards.

If you'd like to pledge without claiming a reward, click the blue 'pledge' button at the top right of this page and select the £10 'pledge' reward, then on the confirmation screen under 'Review and Pay' click 'Pledge More' and enter the amount that you wish to pledge. Otherwise, scroll down the side of this page to see everything we have to offer, then make a pledge by choosing your favourite reward. We will also launch some rewards later on so make sure not to miss out  on a 'money cant buy' reward and check back here!

Every pledge makes a difference.

Unles we hit our £15,000 target we get NOTHING so pledge now and...

Help to make The Horsfall a reality!

Thankyou for your support.

" We can't wait for this brilliant community venue to open and for the chance to work creativly with some of 42nd Street's young people." - Local womens group

Young people say:

“I like coming here because I get to express how I feel about everything. Everything I say, everyone listens to it and I don’t feel awkward or embarrassed to say it. We actually talk about things that can help us.” - Young woman, 15

“I feel like a different person after coming to the group.” - Young man, 19

“I feel like I want to get involved because people care.” - Young woman, 16

Our partners say:

“We were really impressed when we saw the plans for The Horsfall project as it will not only see the complete restoration of an important Victorian building but will also help improve young people’s mental health through a series of engaging heritage, arts and learning activities. Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, the Victorian shop will now be transformed into a much-needed community space in the heart of Ancoats, providing vital opportunities and support for local young people for many years to come.” - Sara Hilton, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund North West

The Location

Based centrally on the corner of Great Ancoats Street and Jersey Street we are currently lovingly renovating a four storey Victorian shop. The original Ancoats Art Museum was based at Ancoats Hall and only closed in 1953. Sadly the hall was demolished in the 1960s.

The Team

We are part of a wonderful team at 42nd Street who have had employees work for them for over 30 years! Our Horsfall project is just getting going and our team is growing as we speak, but at the moment we have a few key players... The Creative Agents, our brilliant group of young people, Niki our Engagement Officer, Rebecca our Finance and Communications Officer, Julie our Creative Producer and  Simone our 42nd Street CEO.

Funding

This work would not have been possible without the support and contributions from Land Aid, Heritage Lottery Fund, Redevco, The Homes & Communities Agency, KeiranFest and The Kim Linfield Trust.
