800 Acres of low quality agricultural land for restoration, 500 acres of food forest focusing on historic Welsh plants.

We have currently secured £800k to buy the land and looking to raise a further £30k towards setting up our 20 Acre Market Garden.

How much are we looking to raise?

£30,000.

What will the funding be used for?

  • First stage Land Improvements
  • Setting up commercial nursery - we have been offered 3 commercial greenhouses in Bristol for £10,500.00
  • Setting up the 20 acre Market Garden
  • Year 1 of Grafted Trees for The Edible Forest (500 acres)

Summary

We have offered to buy 800 acres of low quality land in South Wales between Rhigos and Blaengwarch with an 8 year plan to reforest it. After 3 years we will be submitting an application to setup a One Planet Development Ecovillage (ONE PLANET VILLAGE: THE EDIBLE FOREST).

The project would be better described as a 'Plant Based Farming Village', where 100's of new small businesses are being setup by to supply products to 7 surrounding villages which currently have no farmers markets or small food businesses.

Our Mission

We are proposing to create the following:-

500 Acre Edible Forest - Welsh Natural Museum
Forest School (restoring 2 Grade II Listed farm Buildings)
100 Acre Intensive Market Garden supplying food to 7 surrounding local villages
80-100 Acre Animal Sanctuary
100 Acre 'Eternal Woodlands'- natural burial site

Proposed BBC TV Series on the project development (by the producer of Dirty Vegan).

Site Plan

Project Benefits

  • Local Food production, climate benefits, lower cost organic food for local people.
  • The reforestation will protect wildlife habitats, improve biodiversity and support the natural world
  • Reforestation provides flood defences to local areas.
  • It will also provide protection from pollution.
  • The project will help build stronger communities.
  • Preserving heritage & culture. Historic varieties of Welsh fruit trees & other food plants (a 'natural museum')
  • It will make an environmental difference for all people around the World (becoming an example for others to replicate).
  • We will provide educational learning and social involvement for local schools & people which will excite and inspire mainly children and young people to get involved in nature and taking action to make a difference.
  • There will be greater local food security. We currently live on a small island with millions of people and 90% of our fruit & veg is imported.
  • The project will encourage healthier and more active people and communities. Local people with affordable locally grown organic produce.
  • We will eventually provide local jobs involved with teaching, gardening, and in harvesting, processing and selling dried/fresh fruit & nuts.
  • This is a project that will benefit everyone and many more to come.

Project Stages

Years 1-3

  • Develop market garden and marketplace, people from surrounding villages to come in to us to purchase products.
  • Carry out land improvements (sections at a time).
  • Start planting the 500 Acre Edible Forest

Years 4-8

  • Make planning application for ONE PLANET VILLAGE: THE EDIBLE FOREST - 120 plot Ecovillage (Plant Based Farming Village to manage the site). We will propose setting up a Vegbox Delivery Scheme, reducing traffic coming into us and linking all of the One Planet Development business that are being setup at the project.
  • Continue with forest planting and improving on the market gardens.

How will this work?

We will have over 300 people working at the project and hundreds of volunteers from surrounding areas getting involved. There will be volunteer days every single day during the first 3 years, which may well continue for the following 5 years.

Huw Richards is a highly experienced gardener and will be training groups of people & looking over all of the market garden activities.

David Carpenter currently runs a large building company and will oversee all restoration works of the historic buildings on site.

We are proposing the Grade II Farm Buildings will be used as a "Forest School". This will be managed by Darren Lewis who currently runs his own Forest School business. Our intention is for local surrounding schools to get involved in the project possible 1 day a month.

We have lots of suppliers ready to start grafting thousands of rare Welsh trees for us. We currently have research on many other rare Welsh plants for protecting. We also plan to appeal to viewers of the TV Series to contact us if they have any suspected rare welsh food plants in their garden so that we can have these identified.
