Play provisions in the UK are severely underfunded and workshops to help children are consistently being closed down and the ones that remain are having their funding cut.
My idea is to create workshops and shows from my own work which will be centred around a number of activities to engage children based on my extensive experience as a playworker.
My one woman show, The Dragon and St George and other stories, is the retelling of the myth of George and The Dragon but with a twist...instead of fighting George and the dragon become friends. The retelling of this definitive story that stems from our very own national identity is hugely significant given the current political climate - it helps children embrace different cultures and diversity and demonstrates that even the greatest adversaries can be the greatest of friends.
The other side to it is that the performance is interactive and has lots of jokes - laughing in itself is a very important activity
Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body's natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being
Currently I am developing the show and have performed exerts for the well respected comedy for kids company as part of their season at in soho theatre and have performed for them in a room at the Royal Albert Hall as part of their season there
Although I am proud that I am in such a fantastic location, I want my show to reach poorer families who cannot afford to attend performances of when they are in prestigious and expensive venues as they are now. The funding is a way of developing my work and ensuring it's not just the well off families who benefit from it.
Funding is required so I can develop what I am doing currently to create workshops and introduce them to underfunded playcentres in the UK. This way the show and my work can reach a wider and more socially inclusive demographic. Eventually I would like to be able to grow the network in order that more performers can use the platform I have created to take their shows to the wider community ensuring that unprivileged kids the attention they deserve.
