The Donkey Project

The avcp is looking for funding to buy and train a small gentle donkey to work with disabled children

We did it!

On 17th May 2014 we successfully raised £1,590 of £1,500 target with 10 supporters in 28 days

Who We Are:

We are The Alkham Valley Community Project and Therapeutic Riding Centre based just outside of Dover in Kent.

We provide carriage driving, horse riding and learning opportunities for disabled children and adults to promote their health and wellbeing.

The Work We Do:

We are one of the only projects in the country to provide therapeutic carriage driving 5 days a week, 50 weeks of the year to vulnerable adults and children.

Over 200 people take part on a regular basis.

We are currently hosting a very successful project for children with disabilities supported by funding from Children in Need.

Therapeutic horse riding is a therapy that uses the movement of the horse which is, rhythmic and repetitive as a way of aid physical development, build core strength, improve balance, and stimulate the senses.

Carriage driving is an activity which helps to develop balance, improve muscle strength, and promote increases in body coordination, confidence and self-esteem. The activity is a challenging and stimulating experience which provides exercise and promotes communication skills. Driving also offers opportunities for those who would not be able to mount a horse, enabling such participants to engage in an equine activity on equal terms to the more able bodied.

Why We Are Crowdfunding:

Many of the children who attend our sessions are very vulnerable and fragile; therefore we are looking for a trained therapy donkey.

Donkeys make an ideal alternative to a larger pony. They have long been celebrated for their caring, emphatic nature and their ability to bond with people very quickly. Donkeys are considered to be hypo allergenic compared to ponies and therefore ideal for those with breathing or skin allergies.

This special donkey will be used to draw wheelchair accessible carriages and to provide therapeutic companionship and equine assisted therapy.

This little donkey would have the best of homes whilst doing such a worthwhile job.

The AVCP is committed to providing the best we can for the clients that attend. All the projects we deliver offer subsidised prices and the trustees work tirelessly to ensure that this continues.

This is the first time we have attempted to fund through Crowd funding and we are excited to be involved with this new innovative public funding forum.
