How Alice live and breath:

Alice Charity works directly with vulnerable children and families in times of crisis. Underpinned by the values of compassion, being inclusive, offering unconditional love, and showing kindness, the charity makes a tangible, practical, mental, and emotional difference to their lives. Alice Charity offers the unconditional love and support you would give to your own family if they were in need. Alice Charity is a helping hand when times get tough; it’s a cuppa and a chat when life seems to be out of control; it’s food in the fridge, a danger-free home, debt advice, new parent support, a good night’s sleep and a great day at school. It’s a hand up to a better future.

Our much-needed project:

Our Dad Community project is our latest project that is a support group connecting Single Dads across the communities of Newcastle & Stoke.

It isn’t always easy to ask for help, more so for men. Over the last two years, we have seen an increase in single dads needing help from our family support workers. Feedback from our Dad's is that pride gets in the way when sharing their vulnerability. There is nowhere within the community that gives support to men single or not who have children. The mental health of all our dad's is low, we believe with encouragement from other dad's going through the same obstacle in life that this can only be a help.

There are many barriers for dads asking for help and we aim to break them down with the benefit of support from a life coach who will work alongside our family support team. A dad who has been there, done it, and has got the T-shirt. Darren, now a recruited Alice family support worker, is currently contacting our dads weekly and offering support to help them to achieve their dreams and realise their potential and to give dads tools to support them to turn away from poverty or simply offer solutions to what their needs may be financially, physically, mentally and emotionally. Currently, we have 8 dads receiving 121’s and from November our Dad Community group meetings and individual coaching will be done via Teams.

The hope is that eventually when our dads are ready to do so after building trust with Darren that we can provide the opportunity for them to meet together to help dads open up to one another about the issues they are going through, we can in a discreet and invasive manner then enable focus and support unconditionally to allow our dads to grow and believe in themselves.

The end goal:

We hope that the dad community provides dad with better states of mind to help them to think clearly and give them the strength to deal with issues head-on with a drive to look at measures to help themselves with continued support from Alice and our Life coach. In turn, this will then enhance their home life and allow our dads to give support to their children as and when it's really needed, and aim to build on their resilience to break the cycle of poverty and disadvantage.

How Aviva community funding will be spent:

Any funding we can raise through the Aviva community funding will allow us to provide the services of Darren our life coach to work with weekly with our Single dads.

It will give provision for social media content to be created specifically for our Dad Community, inspirational videos created by Darren, or promotional content for the project to attract dads to reach out for support. Check out Alice's Facebook page to see videos that went out in lockdown to give dad's encouragement and empowerment at that time.

We are hoping that sometime in the future funding can be used for a venue for dads to get together where we will provide some form of refreshments when Covid Restrictions allow.
