The story is really a very simple one. I have been self employed in the building trade for many years in which time I have accumulated many varied skills. Mainly I do carpentry based projects including plumbing and finishing such as bathrooms and kitchens. I have also worked in shop fitting and solar installation over the years. I have always loved getting a way in various vehicles.
In recent years more and more people are taking to the road. Prohibitively, the cost of a fully kitted out, mass produced camper is high and in my opinion they are rarely that attractive and lack uniqueness. So my plan is simple. Convert vans, commercial vehicles and horse boxes into individually unique motor homes. The specification could just include the functional conversion such as insulation and systems leaving a blank canvass for the client to add their own touch to, or the complete conversion.
I am also keen to use recycled and upcycled materials where possible. This has obvious implications from an environmental perspective and also adds a touch of one off character. Along the same theme, conversions would include complete off grid capability and where possible LPG conversions and heating systems.
I have access to secure premises in Telford, Shropshire at a very reasonable rent and I already have the skills and tools to do the job.
The money would be used to quite simply purchase a vehicle and the components for the conversion.
I am confident having studied various groups and websites that there is a market for unique and bespoke conversions and with the right systems I anticipate turning over one vehicle every 5 to 6 weeks and grossing a margin of around 75%. As such I would anticipate repaying any investments within two years.
The key to the success of this project is getting it out there. As previously mentioned there are a multitude of sites and social media groups in this area, a number of which I am already a member. There is growing movement of people in the UK who are choosing going mobile as a lifestyle choice with an increase in the numbers of people who work in cities but live in a vehicle. This is particularly prevalent in London. I have a passion for this lifestyle and the skills to put it into practice and make a successful business.
