As a qualified art therapist / creative therapist with 12 years experience I understand how powerful the act of being creative can be in understanding more about ourselves and therefore gaining insight and wisdom. My focus is on mental health and promoting positive well-being for all so I believe people from all walks of life can benefit, not just those with obvious issues. Sometimes we just need to stop in this busy world and listen to our hearts. Even better if there is someone to listen with us, to witness and to help us reach clarity. My experience has taught me that people respond to many different ways of working so I use puppets, poetry, miniatures, angel cards and clay as well as the more usual tools of paint and pens. These help us access our 'inner child' or our 'highest self' - and therein lies the wisdom we often need!
Recent findings from www.mentalhealth.org.uk state that current levels of mental health are low and deteriorating. Only 13% of people in the UK report living with high levels of good mental health. The website defines 'thriving' in their 'Surviving or Thriving' report as 'the capacity of each of us to feel, think and act in ways that enhance our ability to enjoy life and deal with the challenges we face.' Sadly many people are really just surviving. And I want to make a difference.
It is my intention to provide a safe, welcoming space where time stands still for a while: a space to be truly you. A space different from any other - a bowtop-type caravan - which will symbolise the unique journey we are all making in life. I intend offering a variety in length of session, but usually short, to anyone who wishes to step inside for a while. Perhaps a person may decide this is work they would wish to pursue and I will help them find ways of doing that. We will sit together and see what we need to do. The 'tools' will look on, waiting to be utilised or not; waiting for the work to begin - it is underpinned by my membership of the Health and Care Professions Council and the British Association of Art Therapists. We will seek a way forward.
The project requires purchase of a gypsy caravan or 'bowtop' (one similar to the drawing above sometimes for sale at around £7,500 ) and a vehicle with which to tow it. I have all other necessary equipment. Although I would be based in Stone, England, it would be wonderful to extend this service to all parts of the UK, especially more isolated, rural areas . I intend that payment for sessions in the bowtop would be flexible and when appropriate, and when funds allow, I would hope to offer some sessions for free. If I do not meet my target I will pursue match funding, so all donations would be hugely appreciated. Thank you!
