The Bookbinding Bus

The Bookbinding Bus

This project was set up to purchase and equip an ex-council mobile library to take bookbinding workshops out into the community

Unfortunately, this project was not successful

This project was set up to purchase and equip an ex-council mobile library to take bookbinding workshops out into the community. It is now no longer possible to study for an accredited course in bookbinding anywhere in the UK and we are working hard to highlight this.

The Bookbinding Bus is an exciting new not-for-profit project to bring the craft of bookbinding to schools, city centres, music and literary festivals. We are currently booked to run workshops at Cheltenham and Bath Literary Festivals and are in negotiations with Glastonbury, Hay and Wilderness.

Participants of all ages will come away with a hard back book that they have made from scratch - folding and sewing the paper sections, adding the endpapers, making up a hard cover with cloth spine and decorative paper sides and then putting the whole thing together. The workshop takes approximately 3 hours.

The bus will also be equipped to hold more advanced workshops for those with bookbinding experience - gold tooling, leather covering, headband sewing, edge decoration. The tutor is Kate Holland. Kate has huge experience in delivering workshops and demonstrations to all ages and abilities. She is a Fellow of the Designer Bookbinders and has books in many collections including the British and Bodleian Libraries.

Kate is also a tutor for the BoundbyVeterans charity which provides bookbinding tuition to wounded, sick and injured ex-servicemen and women. Bookbinding has been found to be incredibly therapeutic and brings the great satisfaction of making something with your hands, the perfect antidote to the age we live in.

There is a great variety of rewards available in return for your donation. Here is a little explanation of the rewards available when deciding to sponsor this exciting project.
