Sterts is an unusual theatrical setting: a 400-seat amphitheatre set on the side of Bodmin Moor, in the open Cornish air yet protected from summer rain by a massive canopy. Since its' foundation in 1982 Sterts has supported artists both professional & amateur. We provide a diverse programme of over 70 live theatre/music/dance events each summer at the centre in Upton Cross. Sterts Theatre operates from early May through to late September. Our local area is made up of small villages and hamlets that are remote from the main towns and thus are very limited in terms of the services they are able to offer such as education courses, lifestyle courses or activities that encourage community cohesion. Sterts is using its facilities to fill this gap and provide much needed opportunities to our local rural population. Sterts Arts & Environmental Centre's Registered Charity Number is 1189424. Sterts was awarded the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service in June this year.
Sterts wishes to hire a professional theatre writer and a musical director to write a musical comedy for the use of Sterts in its Summer season 2022. The aim would be to write and 'try out' the musical during a 2 week period in the Spring of 2021 using professional writers and performers to prove the concept and its format prior to applying for an Arts Council England grant to take the work into full production in the summer of 2022 using professional and community based singers, actors and musicians. The work has been given a working title of 'The Beast' as in the legendary Beast of Bodmin Moor. Sterts has a distinguished history of performing new work from local and visiting writers incorporating our own community actors and professional actors and musicians working alongside each other.
