The COVID-19 pandemic has created some very uncertain times for millions of UK businesses, and the Amethyst Centre is in need of funding

The global COVID-19 pandemic has created a very uncertain landscape for  millions of British small businesses, which is going to make it very challenging for businesses to survive. Together we can help them.

Personal history

I set up the Amethyst Centre in 2015, using my personal pension. It is a complementary therapy and training centre in Coventry, and we have survived some very tough times in the past.

Last year I had a total shoulder replacement operation, and the 12 weeks I had to take off as unpaid sick leave completely wiped out any reserves I had built up in the previous times. Now I face having to close what is actually a very successful business, along with many others.

What we do

I'd like to be able to reopen when this whole issue is over, not only to serve the clients and students we have at the moment - who are quite literally left in limbo just now - but also the whole community of Coventry. In the past we have held fundraisers for groups such as Coventry Comfort Carers, the Christmas provision for the homeless, Helping Handbags for homeless women, and a local women's refuge benefits from our clients every Christmas.

As far as training goes, we offer City and Guilds training in complementary therapies and we have a cohort about halfway through their course. Some of them would be finished in 3 months time, others by next January, but as it stands they are all in danger of not completing their training in aromatherapy and reflexology.

We also offer low-cost counselling by having counselling students on placement. This means we can ease the burden on local counselling services and makes this particular aspect a vital part of the local health economy.

We also offered a home to the healers and teachers from the local spiritual church when it closed in 2016, and this is a vital part of the local healing scene and we regard it as crucial to the life of the Centre.

We offer voluntary placements to people who want to help us: we can provide work placements for those on Universal Credit, and we can also provide mentorship to those who want to set up their own therapy business.

We are known as a haven of calm in the heart of the city. You literally wouldn't know we are on a main arterial route connecting the city to the motorway once you are inside!

Whatever rewards you choose, you will be able to claim them when we've reopened. Just contact the Centre and we will make arrangements for you to come in.

We ask project owners to honour their rewards wherever possible but please note that all pledges are donations and there is no guarantee that you will receive any rewards from the project owner. Please see Crowdfunder's Terms of Use for more information regarding rewards for pledges.
