This project stems from our Golden Years programme, which are groups for people aged 60 + that enables them to join like-minded individuals for tea, a chat, a chance to knit or sew, a game of cards or to get support with using your tablet or mobile phone.
Loneliness and isolation are feelings that we can all experience, but it can be worse when you are older, these clubs are a great way for the senior residents of Barking & Dagenham to connect with each other.
But don't take it from us, here is a video from Eddie Cook, one of our Golden Year's members:
Evolving into Tech To Connect
It became clear that a-lot of our Golden Years members felt isolated or cut off from the rest of the world and some of their families. Many of them were also unsure or wary of the digital world. We have found that giving them the skills and confidence to connect to online platforms such as Facebook gave them another way to connect to old friends and family, especially younger members of their families such as grandchildren. Having more accessible and regular contact digitally with their families really helped combat the feeling of being cut off and isolated.
From that, Tech To Connect was born, classes that offer the skills and confidence to our Golden Years members.
How your money will help
Unfortunately, due to the nature of technology, getting these elderly members of our community online isn't something that can be done for free. Many of our clients lack the the devices to get started. The money will go to helping making these classes a success, as-well as Golden Year's as a whole.
