Tarbert Toppers junior sailors rely on the safety boat and its crew, not only to ensure they are safe on the water but for coaching and instruction. We are now fundraising to replace the safety boat engines, without which we cannot conduct any on the water junior sailing activity. In 2018 there was a huge push to keep the club going and support the growing numbers of local people who are engaging with the club. We were fortunate enough to be well supported by local people and businesses and even received donations from local small grants and village visitors in 2018, for the purchase two new beginner level dinghies. Unfortunately, the increased activity is taking its toll on the ageing safety boat engines which have already undergone several repairs and are not likely to survive another season.
We have applied to Aviva Community Fund to support our bid, but we also need support from our local community, as we continue to make an effort to raise some of the required funds by ourselves! This is a big ask because we need to find funding to replace the engines before the Spring of 2019, if we are to continue to offer sailing to all the children who want to participate.
The club is run by a wide range volunteers drawn from the local community who generously give of their time, expertise and equipment to support the club during training sessions and in fundraising activities.
Tarbert Toppers junior sailing club is open to all in the local community and even beyond. The current roster of regular junior sailors is growing and is now more than 20 however as many as 50 children from the area may participate during a single sailing season. We are often joined by a number of holiday visitors to the area too, which plays a small part in sustaining the reputation of Tarbert as an attractive tourist destination.
Our Club was established as a junior sailing club in the late 1970s by members of the local community and is fast approaching half a century in existence, in fact many of the first Tarbert Toppers children are now participating as volunteers and local young people return frequently to pass on their skills and experience to the new generation.
So, thanks for clicking and thanks for supporting Tarbert Toppers to keep afloat, literally!
